NRL Round 25 schedule, odds, title betting — eighth place still up for grabs for finals

NRL round 7: Cowboys v Titans

Here is our early look at the betting on NRL round 25, the final round of the regular season, with the eighth and final spot in the finals still up for grabs.

Three teams – Cronulla, Canberra and Gold Coast – are in the hunt to claim eighth place, with the Newcastle Knights having sewn up seventh place last weekend with their 15-14 win over the Titans.

The Sharks hold eighth place but face a tough final-round match-up against the Melbourne Storm on Friday.

Canberra could move ahead of them with a win against the Roosters on Thursday night, while the Titans are relying on the Sharks and Raiders to both lose and then the Titans winning easily against the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday.

In early markets, Australian bookies have the Raiders at $2.12 to beat the Roosters ($1.72), while the Sharks are outsiders against the Storm at around $2.80.

The Storm won’t lack for motivation as they need a win to secure the minor premiership, but just a warning: be sure to check the final teams in all matches before betting as some teams may decide to rest players if the result of their round-25 match does not affect where they will finish in the top eight.

Storm, Panthers and Rabbitohs are certain to finish in the top three spots, though fourth-placed Manly need to win against the Cowboys at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on Saturday to be sure of finishing in the double chance spot.

The Roosters and Parramatta are hoping the Sea Eagles will slip up but Manly have the added advantage of playing last, meaning if the Roosters and Eels both lose on Thursday and Friday, fourth place is safe.

The Eels play in the match of the round on Friday night against the Panthers.

NRL Premiership odds before Round 25

Bookies don’t believe Souths can win without Latrell Mitchell at fullback, with the Bunnies out from $6 to $9.50 in title betting with TopSport despite their thrashing of the Roosters last weekend.

Mitchell, who is probably the most devastating attacking weapon in the game, won’t play again this season after being banned for his awful high shot on former teammate Joey Manu.

The Roosters is unlikely to play again this season because of the facial fracture he suffered in the high hit from Mitchell, further weakening the already decimated Roosters side.

At the top of betting, Melbourne eased from $2.30 to $2.40 after their winning streak was ended at 19 in a row by the fighting Eels, while Penrith were $3.20 to $2.70 now that they are getting back to full strength, with halfback Nathan Cleary almost back to his brilliant best after his shoulder injury.

Manly have all but locked up fourth place and are all of a sudden right in the mix, in to $6.50 from $9 last week, while the Eels firmed from $51 to $19. The Roosters blew from $18 to $41 and look ripe for the picking in round one of the finals.
