Collingwood v Port Adelaide betting tips, prediction & odds; AFL Rd 18 preview

AFL finals week two: Geelong v Collingwood.

Welcome to our Collingwood v Port Adelaide betting tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL round 18 clash at the Gabba on Monday night.

So we arrive at the last match of an AFL home and away season like no other, and the interest in this match could not be higher.

The result in the match between the Magpies and Power will affect the entire draw for the AL finals series, including which team must make the dreaded trip to Perth to take on the West Coast Eagles.

Here is the AFL 2020 finals scenario with the different outcomes from the Collingwood-Port match. The bookmakers have made the Power $1.63 favourites against Collingwood ($2.28), so we will visit that scenario first.

If Port Adelaide win, the first week of the finals will look like this:

  • Port Adelaide v Geelong at Adelaide Oval
  • Brisbane Lions v Richmond at the Gabba
  • West Coast v Collingwood at Optus Stadium, Perth
  • St Kilda v Western Bulldogs at the Gabba or Metricon Stadium

If Collingwood win, the first week of the finals will look like this:

  • Brisbane Lions v Geelong at the Gabba
  • Port Adelaide v Richmond at Adelaide Oval
  • West Coast v Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium, Perth
  • Collingwood v St Kilda at the Gabba or Metricon Stadium

So as you can see there is a lot on the line: Port will be motivated by their desire to finish top of the table, while Collingwood must win or make the tough trip to Perth in week one of the finals.

Collingwood have won the past two matches against Port Adelaide by an average of 45 points, but the 2020 Power are a very different proposition.

The Power have won their past four matches straight, after a terrible loss to Geelong when they were thumped by 10 goals.

Their four successive wins have come against also-rans Hawthorn, Sydney, North Melbourne and Essendon, so there is a query about how strong that form is, though all you can do is win and the Power have done it in fine style.

Collingwood have won three of their past four matches since a poor loss to Melbourne. They lost a tight contest to Brisbane, and beat North Melbourne, Carlton and the Gold Coast in their most recent outing.

The good news for the Pies though was the return against the Suns of forward superstar Jordan De Goey and midfield prime mover Adam Treloar. The Pies’ forward line looked instantly transformed by the return of De Goey, who booted four goals, with giant American Mason Cox also stepping up with his best game of the year.

Collingwood have sought to strengthen the forward line even further, bringing in the dangerous but out-of-form Jaidyn Stephenson to replace Callum Brown.

The Magpies have some added motivation with skipper Scott Pendlebury breaking former premiership captain Tony Shaw’s record of most games for the club which stands at 313.

Port Adelaide have made just two changes to the line-up that easily beat Essendon last time out, bringing in youngster Boyd Woodcock and rebounding defender Jarrod Lienert to replace the injured Tom Clurey and the omitted Kane Farrell.

Magpies v Port Power tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Magpies-Power tips for Monday night’s game.

Collingwood to win/match total over 114.5

De Goey’s return last week made the Magpies look a different team than the one which has largely struggled for fluency in the second half of the season. We see this match as close to 50-50 so therefore must go with the outsiders in the betting.

Jordan De Goey most goals group

This a bet with PlayUp to choose from one of six players (three from each team) which will score the most goals. The PlayUp bet for this game includes Port’s giant Charlie Dixon ($2.80), Robbie Gray ($5.50) and Todd Marshall ($6), and Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey ($4), Brody Mihocek ($5) and Jaidyn Stephenson ($6). We are going with De Goey because in general the Pies’ defence has coped well with big forwards, though Gray seems most likely to us to cut loose. Stpehenson has been well out of form and Mihocek has not kicked many goals lately.

Collingwood Magpies v Port Adelaide Power prediction 21/9/2020

This is an absolute cracker of a game as the last match of the season proper. It should boast finals-like intensity before the real action starts in a couple of weeks. Port have locked in a top-two spot, but we are not convinced they will care all that much about finishing top; in fact, they beat Richmond easily and lost by 10 goals to Geelong so they may well prefer to face the Tigers in Adelaide in their first final. Collingwood will be hugely motivated as a trip to Perth in the first week of the finals would be disastrous, we believe. They also will surely lift for Pendlebury, and Treloar gives their midfield some added class. This will be a classic. Our final Collingwood-Port Adelaide prediction: The Magpies by four points.
