The last time Souths and arch rivals the Roosters met, the Rabbitohs put them to the sword in round 20, 2020, with an astonishing 60-8 win that left the Roosters staggering on the ropes and put a huge dent in their hopes of a third NRL title in succession. After that the Roosters narrowly lost two finals in succession to bow out of the race.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson will have reminded his players of that reversal against the Bunnies in the lead-up to this clash, not that the Sydney near neighbours need any extra inspiration to try to put one over their most hated opponents.

This is another match that will boast a finals-like intensity early in the season as both these teams rate highly in betting to take out the 2021 NRL title.

Rabbitohs v Roosters team news for round 3

Roosters captain and hooker Jake Friend (concussion) not been named this week, while NSW captain Boyd Cordner is still on the sidelines as the tricolours take an ultra-cautious approach to his own concussion issues.

But the Bondi boys regain hard-hitting forward Victor Radley after almost a year off with a knee reconstruction. Fellow back-rower Angus Crichton, a former Souths favourite, returns after a one-match ban for a crusher tackle, while hooker Drew Hutchison drops out of the 17.

Souths have named halfback Adam Reynolds despite a heavy head knock in the win over Manly last weekend, while veteran wing recruit Josh Mansour replaces Jaxson Paulo (concussion). Souths prop Junior Tatola (hamstring) is also in some doubt though he was also named to start.

Rabbitohs v Roosters free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Rabbitohs-Roosters betting tips for Friday’s game.

Souths to win/match total over 42.5 points

These are two of the most dazzling attacking sides in the competition, and the Roosters have been exceptional in their opening two matches against lightweights Manly and Wests Tigers, scoring a total of 86 points. It won’t be easy against Souths, who also have plenty of points in them. The weather could be a factor but we see a free-scoring contest.

Damien Cook to score 1 try at $7

The Souths hooker is a big game player and with Friend sidelined there may be some scope to sneak through the middle for the powerhouse runner. To win this option with rising Australian bookie TopSport, Cook must score exactly one try.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Sydney Roosters prediction 26-3-2021

We have to admit to having a soft spot for the Bunnies, but either way this is a great match-up for all NRL fans. The defection of boom Souths-reared youngster Joseph Suaalii to the Roosters in the off-season only adds more fuel to the fire. The Roosters are notorious for their habit of throwing money at young players in their relentless quest for silverware. They have an old, battle-hardened side, with the likes of twins Josh and Brett Morris still in superb form as they approach 35 years of age. We are hoping for a classic and think the Rabbitohs can cause a mini boilover. Our Rabbitohs v Roosters prediction: Souths by four points.
