NRL Saturday: Raiders v Storm, predictions & odds, round 9, 2020

NRL round 9: Eels v Roosters

Canberra Raiders host Melbourne Storm at GIO Stadium in what is clearly the best match of NRL Super Saturday if not the match of the round.

The earlier NRL matches on Saturday are Cronulla Sharks v Penrith Panthers from 3pm, and Brisbane Broncos v Canterbury Bulldogs from 5.30pm.

But no doubt the main event is Canberra v Melbourne; these two teams clashed in the first week back after the COVID-19 hiatus, with the Raiders impressive in beating the Storm 22-6 in Melbourne.

But the Raiders have not been quite so hot since, and suffered a couple of losses before finally returning to the winner’s last last weekend 22-16 against St George Illawarra.

Meanwhile, the Storm have been one of the in-form teams in the NRL and brought down the Sydney Roosters 27-25 last weekend, even without star playmaker Cameron Munster.

That come-from-behind win was an epic performance but it will be interesting to see just how much energy that has extracted from the tough Melbourne pack.

Melbourne have made a few forced changes with Marion Seve in for winger Suliasi Vunivalu (hamstring). Munster has been named on the extended bench and could make a shock return after missing only one match with a knee issue.

The Raiders have copped a couple of injury blows from the match against the Dragons, with forwards Sia Soliola (facial fracture) and Emre Guler (ankle)  ruled out.

Raiders v Storm free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for the Raiders v Storm clash.

Raiders to win/match total over 34.5 points

We are tipping an upset here, basing it on Canberra’s good recent record against Melbourne, their home-ground edge plus the fact Melbourne played in a gut-busting extra-time game last weekend. Plus the Raiders are due to snap back into title-contending form.

Raiders to win by 7-12 points

As mentioned we think the Raiders can win but we don’t think it will be by much as the Storm don’t know the meaning of the word surrender. These margin bets are always tricky but that difficulty factor is reflected in the price of $7 with Unibet for this option.

Canberra Raiders v Melbourne Storm prediction

They say you should never bet against a champion and there is no doubt Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy and veteran rake Cameron Smith fit into that category. But we will this time! Mainly because it’s possible the move away from Melbourne to be based on the Sunshine Coast and the emotional extra-time win over Roosters will have sapped them somewhat. Our final selection: Canberra Raiders by 8 points.
