NRL round 11: Raiders v Storm betting tips

Melbourne Storm host the Canberra Raiders in what is arguably the match of the NRL round, and it is clearly the pick of the three matches being played on Saturday.

The earlier matches are NZ Warriors v St George Illawarra at Central Coast Stadium and Cronulla v Wests Tigers at Bankwest Stadium. Those matches will be entertaining but are really an entree to this clash between two modern heavyweights of the competition.

The Storm and Raiders played an epic final last year in which the Raiders triumphed 12-10 on their way to ultimately losing the grand final against the Sydney Roosters. No doubt these two teams will be right in the thick of the finals action again this year, and both won their opening two matches before the coronavirus-induced shutdown of the NRL.

This match is being played at Melbourne’s home ground AAMI Park, but that holds no fears for the Raiders, who beat the Storm twice there last year and of course won’t have any home-town fans to deal with.

Canberra stalwart Josh Papalii is playing his 200th NRL match to give the visiting team a little extra motivation.

The NRL returned to action on Thursday night, with the Brisbane Broncos clashing with the Parramatta Eels in the first game back after the Covid-19 shutdown.

On Friday night the Roosters and Rabbitohs were due to play, with the Bunnies rank outsiders with most rugby league betting sites.

Storm v Raiders free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for the Storm v Raiders clash.

Melbourne to win -3.5 points at $1.90

Given the disruptions of late you can expect this home ground advantage to be extremely useful for the Storm. Canberra will play their “home” games at Campbelltown Stadium in Sydney so they may feel a little out of synch early on. The $1.90 with leading bookmaker Unibet for the Storm to win by 4 points or more seems value to us this time.

Melbourne to win/match total under 37.5

This option is available at around $3 with Unibet. While the forecast is for clear weather, both of these teams are very solid on defence, and may be a little underdone in attacking combinations.

Melbourne Storm v Canberra Raiders prediction

Your humble WGL correspondent is predicting this to be a brutal encounter, with points hard to come by. That is generally perfectly suited to how the Storm go about their business. One interesting aspect will be to see how the ruck is policed. The NRL has said it will crack down on infringements in this area, and the Storm have always been masters at slowing the play-the-ball. We will certainly learn a lot about it from this game. We’re are going to tip the Storm in a close one here. Good punting.
