Top 10 casinos to visit in South Africa

South Africa is home to some of the most picturesque casinos in the world, but they are not just a pretty facade, with heavy gambling action taking place right across the country. Here is our top 10 live casinos list for South Africa:

Sun City Casino

Sun City Casino, located in Rustenburg, has to be seen to be believed and sits comfortably in the top few gambling venues in South Africa. Sun City Casino has more than 40 tables open at peak times, while there are over 1000 electronic machines, including slots, available to play. Sun City Casino is also home to the VIP area Salon Prive, which is one of the better high roller rooms in the country.

Grand West Casino

The biggest and some say the best casino in South Africa, the Grand West is located in Cape Town and is a slot machine player’s dream. On top of the 2500 electronic games the casino also has over 80 gaming tables. Open every day, GrandWest Casino has all the classic games available, including blackjack, roulette, baccarat and poker. Owned by SunWest International, the casino has a monopoly on live gambling in Cape Town, with it the only legal gambling venue in the area. The casino has come under some fire from patrons, who describe it as overcrowded and understaffed, with not enough tables open.

Khoroni Casino Resort

Want to make your casino experience truly unique? Khoroni Casino, located in Thohoyandou, is a small casino with about 15 gaming tables and 300 electronic poker machines. While it might not have the glam, bright lights of other SA gambling venues, Khoroni Casino is in a beautiful area and has a laid back vibe that will suit many people. Believe it or not, the casino is broken up into two sections, the smoking casino (which has roulette and blackjack) and the non-smoking casino, which only features slot machines. Guess they are banking on smokers being more reckless.

Time Square Casino

Time Square Casino, located in the Menlyn Maine District in Pretoria, is one of the newer gambling venues on our top South African casinos list. Not just a casino, Time Square has 12 bars, accommodation, entertainment, dining and conference facilities in the heart of South Africa’s capital. With 60 tables, including American roulette, baccarat and blackjack, Time Square Casino is not just pretty to look at. Oh yeah, they also have over 2000 electronic poker machines.

Boardwalk Casino

Another of the Sun International-owned casinos on our list, the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World is located in Port Elizabeth. The beautiful complex is located on the Beach Front and is actually a great destination to take the family, with some really nice restaurants and entertainment venues. The gambling part of the establishment includes close to 1000 electronic gaming machines and more than 30 tables. It’s worth going to the Boardwalk Casino just for the strange architecture. Like all Sun international casinos the electronic machines work on a smart card system, meaning cash is not needed.

Silverstar Casino

Located in Krugersdorp in the West Rand, the Silverstar Casino offers punters upwards of 900 slot machines and a bevy of tables. These tables include games like American Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat and Poker, with table limits generally suiting all types of players. Silverstar Casino also offers a VIP experience, known as Prive, which essentially lets you bet on a more secluded table or play one of 140 slots, but be warned, you will need to spend plenty to earn this honour.

Emperors Palace

Emperors Palace Casino in Johannesburg is grand to say the least, with this complex also featuring accommodation, restaurants and entertainment. All located within a few minutes of Tambo International Airport, Emperors Palace Casino as a gaming venue, stacks up well with a strong selection of table games and poker machines. Emperors Palace Casino is also one of the better poker venues in South Africa, having hosted World Poker Tour events in the past. Emperors Palace is a great place to stay if you want to hit the tables and fly out the next morning.

Emnotweni Casino

The first thing we will say about Emnotweni Casino is take a jumper into the premises, because the air-conditioning is rather cold. Despite this, Emnotweni Casino is a beautifully presented complex that also features entertainment, dining and is only minutes from the Kruger National Park. There really is plenty to do around the Nelspruit area and why not stay at the casino, so when the lights go down you can take part. The table games at Emnotweni Casino include blackjack, roulette and various formats of poker.

Carnival City Casino

Carnival City Casino is located just north of Johannesburg, with this basically a suburb. Carnival City has hundreds of real money slots games, plus a good selection of table game titles. These include the standards like blackjack, roulette, poker and baccarat. Carnival City does however have some cool variations of these games which we have not seen at other South African casinos.

Graceland Casino

Graceland Casino in Secunda is an absolutely beautiful complex, that even has a golf course designed by legend Gary Player. On top of beautiful accommodation, the resort also features a casino, which includes a small selection of table games and plenty of slot machines. Graceland Casino is probably not at the top of our best SA casinos list because it doesn’t have enough tables, but it is one tourists should definitely visit.

What games are available at SA land-based casinos

Land-based casinos in South Africa are allowed to host games approved by their regulator, which means the titles on offer across the country vary from casino to casino.

As a general rule you will find the most popular casino games, such as poker, blackjack, roulette and baccarat at gambling venues, but most will also have some unique or less popular titles. These include games like Pai Gow and Big Wheel, which we have seen in our travels.

Most SA casinos on our list have good official websites, that give you extensive information on what games they have on offer, including table limits and the amount of slots they will have.
