Carlton v Geelong tips, prediction & odds; AFL Rd 17 Preview 2021

Carlton v Geelong betting tips and predictions for Saturday July 10 2021; Rd 17 AFL

Welcome to our Carlton v Geelong tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL round 17 clash at the MCG on Saturday.

The Cats are a hot favourite to win this encounter with an 11-4 win loss record for 2021, but Carlton has won successive games against Fremantle and Adelaide to charge back into finals contention.

The 13th-placed Blues can almost certainly kiss the finals goodbye if they lose this clash against Geelong, but they will take heart from beating them in round 20 last year.

Geelong is paying $1.28 to win with Australian bookmakers, with Carlton ($3.72) not expected to challenge them, but as we have seen in recent weeks nothing is a given. The $1.90 line has been set at 21.5 points.

Carlton is sweating on the fitness of captain Patrick Cripps after he injured a foot in their win over Fremantle, but he is expected to play. They have also resisted rushing injured pair Zac Fisher and Will Setterfield into their line-up, with Zac Williams returning from suspension in place of Tom Williamson.

Geelong has lost superstar recruit Jeremy Cameron to another hamstring injury, with the other first-choice selections set to miss being midfielder Mitch Duncan, Joel Selwood (managed), Luke Dahlhaus (managed) and the unlucky Quinton Narkle who was dropped. Esava Ratugolea, Mark O’Connor and Shaun Higgins have earned a call-up.

Carlton v Geelong tips

Our AFL betting expert has examined the odds and found some value Carlton v Geelong tips:

Tom Hawkins to kick 3+ goals

Hawkins injured his neck a fortnight ago but rebounded last week to kick 6.1 in the Cats’ victory over the Bombers. Hawkins will become the main focal point in the Cats’ attack in Cameron’s absence and three goals seems about par for the veteran superstar. Hawkins to kick 3+ goals is paying $1.67 with Playup

Patrick Dangerfield to have 30 possessions

You can almost bank Cats ace Dangerfied to have 30 possessions with Mitch Duncan and Joel Selwood both missing from their line-up. Dangerfield was outstanding against the Bombers with 37 touches and we can’t see his midfield minutes changing with those Cats outs. When betting on possessions in this clash, keep in mind the Cats have regained tagger Mark O’Connor and he is likely to be deployed to Sam Walsh, who has looked susceptible to the tag in the last month — even though he fought bravely through it against the Dockers.

Jack Silvagni to kick 2+ goals

Silvagni has had some injury problems this season, but there would be many admitting the son of Stephen is better than they thought. Silvagni kicked two goals last week and could have easily had a third. The Blues have limited avenues to goals and this guy is growingly increasingly competent up there and is paying $8.50 to kick 2+ against the Cats. The burning question is whether he will be given a defensive role on Tom Stewart.

Carlton v Geelong prediction 10/7

Geelong is on track to reach the top four again, but they would be concerned with the growing injury list, particularly the hamstring injury to Cameron, who they will be conservative with. The Cats midfield is also beginning to look a little thin without Selwood, which should keep the Blues in the contest for a while. We think the Blues +19.5 offers great value at $1.90 (with Topsport), but with several variables, including an injury cloud over Cripps we are not willing to pick them to win outright. Our final Carlton v Geelong prediction? Cats by 11 points.
