Online sports betting

Australians and sports betting go hand-in-hand, with horse racing, the AFL, NRL and A-League among the biggest betting mediums. There are many legal betting sites available to Aussies, with these licensed by a state or territory government.

Online sports betting in Australia largely centres around several sports, although the depth in what people bet on and what is available to bet on is first-rate. Australia has a thriving bookmaker industry with several of the biggest names being Sportsbet and Bet365, with both of these companies owned overseas.

In Australia there are upwards of 12 big online sports gambling sites, while there are many smaller operators that either have a niche or are on-course bookmakers expanding to the digital space. On top of online betting, Australians can also bet on racing and sports events via TAB retail outlets and their online offering, which is much the same as a corporate bookmaker these days, other than their extensive Tote wagering.

From 2017, Australians have been unable to claim sign-up bonuses or new account incentives at Australian betting sites, with these banned under an update to the Interactive Gambling Act (IGA). This same update slowed the proliferation of Australians betting with offshore sports gambling sites, with it closing a loophole that allowed these sites to legally accept players from this part of the world.

Sports gambling Australians embrace

Horse racing is probably the no.1 pursuit when it comes to online betting in Australia. After all, its entire premise is based on people watching and betting on the outcomes. Other popular betting mediums in Australia include the native Australian Rules, with the top-flight league being the Australian Football League (AFL), rugby league (NRL), basketball (NBL) and even soccer (A-League).

While we have only mentioned the local competitions, Australians dollar-for-dollar are some of the biggest punters in the world and this extends to events held overseas. For instance, Australians seemingly have an inbuilt infatuation with US leagues such as the NBA and NFL; and UK competitions, notably the English Premier League. Basically the sports betting scene in Australia has never been so diverse.

For sports betting sites to be legal in Australia they need to be licensed by a state or territory government and they must abide by the guidelines set out in the National Gambling Framework. This means Australians bet in one of the most regulated and respected gambling jurisdictions in the world.

Mobile sports gambling

Mobile sports gambling has been embraced heavily in Australia, with most betting companies having downloadable apps available. This investment in technology has come about because so many people gamble via mobile these days. Australian bookmakers tell us that well over 50% of all bets are now placed via smartphones and tablets.

For those new to online betting, mobile sports gambling is much the same as doing it via your account. It is it possible to do everything you require via your mobile browser. It is when you start looking to download betting apps that it can become more confusing.

For instance, the two biggest smartphone operating systems are Android (generally found on Samsung smartphones) and iOS (which is Apple’s operating system). Users of these smartphone will be able to download various Australian betting apps within a few clicks. The process of downloading IOS and Android betting apps is slightly different in Australia, but our extensive guides to mobile betting Down Under will ease you through it.

Fantasy sports in Australia

Real money fantasy sports betting or Daily Fantasy Sports is available to Australians, with several strong options providing a variety of tournament-style betting games. These fantasy sports generally focus on the big Australian sports such as AFL, NRL and horse racing, although you will also find options surrounding US sports. DFS gambling is growing in popularity all the time and new brands are constantly emerging in this space.

Fantasy sports for real money can add another high to the adrenalin levels of betting on live sports and racing events. It essentially gives you a way of winning big money, without laying down huge amounts of your hard-earned cash.

Obviously the risk of losing becomes higher when partaking in fantasy sports gambling, because you are betting against others, but for many the risk is outweighed by the potential spoils.

Generally a fantasy sports event will ask you to make your selections prior to the event starting, although some will allow you to do it on the run, if it is a racing event, for instance.

You will be able to enter the fantasy sports tournament up to a certain amount of times, with some tournaments having a cap on the total number of entries, while others will have a fluctuating prize pool (depending on entries).

After entering a fantasy sports tournament you are given a certain amount of points to allocate your bets, which is how you can win. This statement changes slightly when you move from racing to sports, with many tournaments, on AFL for instance, having a flat fee to enter before you pick your players. The better they play and more fantasy points they score, the more chance you have of winning.

Best legal real money fantasy sports gambling sites in Australia

Remember the format and structure of fantasy sports can change from site to site, so it’s important to understand the rules associated with real money fantasy sports sites before playing. There is very limited legal fantasy sports available in Australia for real money, with the only regulated options being:

Online lottery gambling

Online lotto is a legal gambling pursuit in Australia, with two distinctly different types of lotto draws available. Aussies can take part in weekly draws in their own states, while lotto betting is also popular, with this form of gambling considered to be a bookmaker in Australia.

Online lotto gambling guide

Australians have a huge lotto industry at their fingertips, with this the most common form of online gambling, in terms of number of people partaking. Traditional lotto gambling in Australia centres around state-based draws, although this has changed in modern times to embrace huge jackpot draws such as Powerball, which encompass the entire nation.

Each state in Australia has its own gambling regulator which oversees lottery draws and operations, with these tasked with running fair draws. This has changed significantly in recent years, with the state governments essentially selling the rights to their own lotto draws, with Western Australia the only remaining state-backed draw.

While the approach of selling off public assets to private bidders is largely not popular with Australians, the lotto industry has bucked the trend. With Tatts Group controlling so much of the market, it has led to some outstanding national draws. Even Western Australia has thrown its hat into the ring for these draws, allowing its players to pool their entries with other states.

Tatts Group rebranded its Australian lotto gambling offering “the Lott” in 2016, including launching a new website, which made it much easier to buy lotto tickets online.

The minimum age to gamble on lotto draws in Australia is 18, except for Western Australia, where the age was lowered to 16.

The key companies who run lotto in Australia are:

Lotterywest: WA government-owned operator that takes care of all lotto draws in Western Australia.

Tatts Group Limited: Operates in all states in Australia, barring Western Australia, although there are subtle differences in the operation from state-to-state.

Casinos in Australia

Australia has 11 different casinos in its states and territories, with the Sydney and Melbourne casinos probably the biggest. If you’re looking to gamble at an Australian casino they include:

Banned online gambling

Online gambling, other than sports betting and online lottery, is banned in Australia, with no real money casinos based on these shores. The Interactive Gambling Act is the legislation that bans many forms of online gambling Down Under. While the World Gambling List does not advertise offshore online casinos to Australians, you can learn about all aspects of the industry, including what is likely to be available in the future.

Australian online gambling is governed by the Interactive Gambling Act, which was first enacted under the Liberal John Howard government in 2001, but has undergone several updates since. Notably an amendment in 2016 cleared up any confusion about whether gambling sites were legal in Australia, with it now definitively stating that it’s illegal to offer real money online casinos to Australians.

The gambling ban means that technically Australians can’t play online, although there is a thriving illegal online casino industry, punctuated by dodgy operators and people being ripped off. With Australians still pumping millions of dollars into online casinos yearly, we think it is just a matter of time until there is gambling regulation set up to govern the industry.

When online casinos do launch, it will give Australians access to thousands of real money games, including online blackjack, online roulette and online poker. The banning of online poker caused particular angst and the Australian Online Poker Alliance was set up to fight the laws, which stop access to poker giants such as 888 and Pokerstars, two companies that had booming businesses before the legislation update.
