Melbourne v Collingwood betting tips, prediction & odds update; AFL Rd 12

Updated Saturday 2:10pm: Welcome to our Collingwood v Melbourne betting tips, prediction and odds update for their AFL Rd 12 clash at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon.

Collingwood has been backed heavily to defeat Melbourne, after it was confirmed captain Max Gawn and backup ruck Luke Jackson would both miss the clash through injury. This leaves ex-Roos ruckman Braydon Preuss to ruck against Magpies star Brodie Grundy and backup Darcy Cameron.

The movement in the betting is highlighted by the Melbourne vs Collingwood clash being even money up until selection, but now the Magpies are into $1.65 and the Demons have blown out to $2.25. The $1.90 line is a bit narrow for our tastes at 5.5.

The Magpies are coming off a game of two halves against struggling Adelaide: the first half a horror show, with just two goals scored; while the second half was a frustrating domination of a clearly struggling Crows outfit, the Pies eventually winning by four goals.

The Demons walloped an undermanned North Melbourne by 57 points and put themselves in striking distance of a finals berth, given they still have a game in hand following the postponement of their Essendon game because of a COVID scare.

A lot rests on this clash for the Magpies as well, with a win keeping them in the mix for a top four position, while a loss could see them outside the top eight as soon as next round.

The Magpies are set to be boosted by some serious class or for this clash, with captain Scott Pendlebury headlining the inclusions. He is joined by Darcy Moore, Ben Reid and Jamie Elliott, who were managed against the Crows and Will Hoskin-Elliott, who has overcome a knee injury suffered against Fremantle.

Brayden Sier and Jordan Roughead are both out injured and Chris Mayne, Jaidyn Stephenson and Tim Broomhead have been dropped.

The Demons have confirmed skipper Max Gawn has a PCL injury and won’t face Magpies. But in brighter news midfielder Jack Viney will return after missing the game against the Roos with concussion. Jay Lockhart has also received a callup.

Melbourne v Collingwood tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Demons v Magpies tips for Saturday’s game.

Scott Pendlebury to get 20+ touches

If the Magpies skipper declares himself fit he will be ready to go, there is no doubt about this, with Pendlebury among the most professional players in the league. He has made an art form out of terrorising the Demons over the years, and his inclusion will also help his midfield mate Steele Sidebottom, who has been subdued since his suspension. Pendlebury will be around the $1.50 mark to gather 20+ disposals. Which is a conservative but safe bet.

Christian Petracca to get 20 touches and 2+ goals

Various Australian bookmakers have doubles deals on players to kick a certain amount of goals and gather a certain amount of touches. Melbourne star Christian Petracca is their barometer and class and is one of the most improved players in the AFL. The Magpies have a habit of letting these types win a lot of ball in recent times with Dustin Martin and Nat Fyfe prime examples. Petracca will be paying around $6.50 when this market launches.

Collingwood to win/over 100.5 points

This Melbourne vs Collingwood betting tip has been contributed by one of our readers as part of our Fan Zone initiative, where we give a voice to the frustrated punters out there. This Collingwood fan tells me Jack Crisp will get the job on Petracca and the Pies will win and cover the overs market at Unibet. Sounds believable to us and the $3.55 odds make it lucrative.

Melbourne Demons v Collingwood Magpies 15/8/2020

There are a lot of variables heading into this clash, with it still undecided whether Gawn and Viney play, while the Magpies are also yet to fully declare their hand with captain Scott Pendlebury. At this point, we’re going to guess that Pendlebury will play and Gawn won’t which has us leaning towards a Magpies victory, on the back of Grundy dominating the second-stringers. But the Magpies are hardly in good form. Our final Melbourne v Collingwood prediction? Magpies by 14 points.
