Richmond v GWS betting tips, prediction & odds update; AFL Rd 12 preview

Updated Monday 3:50pm: Welcome to our Richmond v Gold Coast betting tips, prediction & odds update ahead of their AFL Round 12 clash being played at the Gabba on Monday night.

This is the final match of the 33 played across 20 days in the AFL’s footy frenzy, with round 13 to take on a more normal look next weekend.

This Tigers-Suns clash will be enlightening though, especially for the Gold Coast, who have struggled in the past month after an impressive burst of form. The Suns have lost to the Bulldogs, Giants and Saints and last round drew with the Bombers.

The Suns, who played out a draw with Essendon last Wednesday, head into this clash with four less days of rest than their opponents.

The Tigers have had a good break since their 21-point loss to Port Adelaide on Saturday, August 8, so will be jumping out of their skin.

Richmond have won the past five matches between these teams by an average of 60 points. The last time they met, small forward Jason Castagna kicked five goals as the Tigers won by 92 points.

As you would expect, the Richmond v Gold Coast betting is all one way traffic, with the reigning premier priced at $1.20 to win, while the Suns odds are at $4.50. Line betting will be popular in this clash, with the $1.90 mark at Unibet set at 24.5.

The Suns may be coming off the shorter break but their list is in great shape, with few players unavailable, though young gun Matt Rowell is a notable exception.

Forward Alex Sexton is back for this match, along with Nick Holman and defender Caleb Graham, with veterans David Swallow and Jarrod Harbrow rested and Sean Lemmens dropped.

Richmond will regain captain Trent Cotchin for the clash with the Suns, while veteran defender Bachar Houli won’t be risked this week. They are still also without key mid Dion Prestia and ruckman Toby Nankervis.

The Tigers included midfielder Jack Graham and defender Oleg Markov in their side this week, dropping former Sun Josh Caddy along with Jack Ross and Derek Eggmolesse-Smith.

Richmond v Gold Coast tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Tigers v Suns tips for Monday’s game.

Gold Coast +22.5 points/match total over 128.5 points

This double is paying around $3.80 with leading bookmaker PlayUp. The weather forecast is fine for Brisbane and the conditions should be conducive to free scoring. We think the Suns have enough firepower to stay in touch.

Tom Lynch 3+ goals

The Richmond spearhead is a former captain of the Suns who turned his back on them to chase premiership glory. The Suns will likely get a stark reminder of what they are missing on Monday night with Lynch looming as the man most likely among the Richmond key forwards.

Gold Coast first-quarter winners

While we don’t think they will ultimately win the match, the odds of $2.70 about the Suns leading at quarter-time are tempting. The Tigers have shuffled the midfield a little this week and may take some time to hit top gear.

Kane Lambert to get most Supercoach points

Our final Richmond v Gold Coast tip is a bit of a novelty market at Unibet where you can bet on who will score the most Supercoach points in the game. Dusty Martin is the hot favourite to top the first group’s points tally, but we like Kane Lambert’s odds of $11. Check out the full groups and odds at Unibet.

Richmond Tigers v Gold Coast Suns 17/8/2020

We suspect this match will be a little tighter than many other experts are predicting. The Suns can run and gun with the best of them and this is really their last chance of staking a finals claim. They have a plethora of talented, developing players and they have a score to settle with Richmond, who have pillaged them over the past five years to reap premiership players Lynch, Caddy and Dion Prestia. In the end though the Tigers need four points to stay right among the race for the top four. They are a little too experienced and well drilled. Our final Richmond v Gold Coast prediction? Richmond by 15 points.
