West Coast v Hawthorn betting tips, prediction & odds ; AFL Rd 12 preview

Welcome to our West Coast v Hawthorn betting tips, prediction & odds update ahead of their AFL Round 12 clash being played at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles have moved into outright premiership favoroitism after a barnstorming month of football and it’s hard seeing Hawthorn stopping them in their current form, even with master coach Alastair Clarkson pulling the strings.

The Hawks did win the last game between the two clubs, with it coming in round 23 last season, but the form-lines are dramatically different in 2020. Fifteenth-paced Hawthorn has struggled in the COVID-19 impacted season, while the Eagles started slowly but have been in blistering form.

It is worth noting when these two teams last played with the packed COVID schedule taking its toll on teams. Hawthorn lost to Fremantle on Monday night, while West Coast defeated Carlton on Sunday, giving them a full week and an extra day’s rest than the Hawks for this one.

The bookies have priced the Eagles as short as $1.14 and the Hawks are paying $5.50 to cause an upset. The $1.88 line has been set at 26.5 for this contest.

West Coast has announced it will be including a first-gamer, with mature-age recruit Nic Reid set to make his debut, while they are also hopeful star defender Jeremy McGovern will be fit to return from a thumb injury.

Hawthorn could be boosted by the return of injured veteran Shaun Burgoyne, while Jon Patton is listed as a test to return from a hamstring injury. Runner Isaac Smith is unlikely to play after sitting out the majority of the Dockers’ loss with a shoulder injury.

West Coast v Hawthorn tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds for some value and found several value Eagles v Hawks tips for Sunday’s game.

Take the unders in the over/unders market

It’s expected to be wet in Perth on Sunday and this means the clash is likely to become a low-scoring scrap. While the Eagles have plenty of firepower the Hawks are really struggling in attack, which has us tipping that the unders is the smart bet in this game with the $1.88. mark set at 111.5. Perhaps wait until game day for this bet, with the weather set to play a huge factor in how many goals are kicked, but keep in mind that mark of 111.5 could go down.

James Worpel to get 20+ touches

Hawks midfielder James Worpel was a breakout star last season and while not being terrible in 2020 he has not been as prominent. This could be because Brownlow Medal winner Tom Mitchell has returned from his long-term injury. Last week, Mitchell gathered 32 possessions and Worpel only 19, which indicates the older player has slipped back into his main man role. On Sunday, there is every chance it’s going to be wet again and the $1.91 up for grabs for Worpel to gather over 20 touches at the coalface looks good value.

Dom Sheed to get 20+ and kick a goal

Dom Sheed has become a crucial player for West Coast and has kicked some important goals in 2020 as Tim Kelly slots into their midfield and pushes class players like this guy forward. Sheed has kicked 2+ goals in his last two outings, while also gathering 24 and 26 possessions. Look to the doubles markets at Unibet where he’ll be priced to kick 1+ goals and gather 20+ touches with this option juicy at around $5.20. He’s also paying $5 to kick 2+ goals for a third successive game.

West Coast Eagles v Hawthorn prediction 16/8/2020

West Coast is a heavy favourite in the betting for this one and we think they will continue their strong form and account for the Hawks. The head-to-head odds make it almost impossible to bet on West Coast outright and we would normally consider the line, but with wet weather threatening, we think the prudent decision is to bet on the player markets and exotics. Our final West Coast v Hawthorn prediction? Eagles by 14 points.
