ACMA blocks online casinos to Australians

Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has demanded internet service providers block more offshore gambling sites.

ACMA has blocked upwards of 1500 different URLs since online casinos were clamped down on 2017, following updates to the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, which essentially forced major operators based out of the UK and Malta to leave Australia.

Australians now are targeted by a plethora of offshore online casinos based in places like Curacao, where the regulator does very little to control their licensees from offering their wares in banned countries.

The latest round of ACMA enforcement action has seen 12 more URLs blocked to Australian internet users, with these largely skins, which will soon spring up on a different URL, run by the same company.

The process of blocking URLs is akin to playing “Whack-A-Mole” with literally thousands of real money gambling sites operating in breach of various iGaming regulators mandates, including the ACMA.

Australians have legal sports betting sites, lotteries and lotto betting, land-based gambling venues and betting shops, but lawmakers are yet to truly embrace online gambling, despite being some of the biggest gamblers in the world.

ACMA’s latest enforcement action has seen the following brands added to the blocked list:

  • Abu King
  • BetAlice
  • Dragon Slots
  • Nova Jackpot
  • Power Up Casino
  • QuickWin
  • Roby Casino
  • Rocketspin
  • Rooster Bet
  • Vegasino
  • Vegas Now
  • Winbay
