Albury Gold Cup betting tips for March 20, 2026

The 2026 Albury Gold Cup is a listed race run over 2000 metres at the impressive Albury racecourse located about 300km north of Melbourne on the NSW-Victoria border.

The cup is the centerpiece of a high-class country carnival and itself offers a $200,000 purse and the golden ticket of eligibility to the rich Big Dance in Sydney. The prizemoney and the Big Dance status ensure the race attracts a field of city-class stayers; the 2026 edition is no different with the smart imported Irish stayer Bear On The Loose atop the betting markets.

While the six-year-old Bear On The Loose, from the powerful Waterhouse-Bott stable, is a deserved favourite, the field boasts some depth and several improving types capable of causing an upset.

Our racing team at World Gambling List have run the rule over the Albury Cup field as well as the rest of the Friday card to find some value bets for those keen to chance their arm on this showcase day for NSW country racing.

Read on for our preview of Albury Gold Cup day.

RACE 6: Albury Guineas

SMART galloper Autumn Break (3) is a hot favourite to roll his fellow three-year-olds after an outstanding effort to finish third in the Country Championship qualifier at Wagga at his most recent start against the older sprinters. In theory, this should be an easier target, but there are a couple of potential big improvers in the form of Jaegers (4) and Ethereum Girl (2). The latter ran a solid fifth in the group 1 VRC Oaks last start and it will be worth watching the betting to see if she is ready for a first-up crush. Ethereum Girl is from the powerhouse Hayes stable. Another that will certainly improve is the nicely bred Romanticism (6) which was beaten at short odds at Goulburn last start but can bounce back quickly. Spread The Love (10), also has plenty of upside.

WGL tips: 2 –3 –6 –10

RACE 7: Albury Gold Cup (listed)

THIS is a cracking edition of this quality race. Bear On The Loose (5) is a talented galloper and has the tactical speed to overcome its wide gate and race from the front. It is also proficient in the wet. At some stage in the straight this stayer will likely be hailed as the winner but it also has had a habit finding one better, as evidenced by its record of four wins and eight placings from 17 starts. Touristic (4) and Geemes (8) fought out the recent Canberra Cup and both have to be considered strong chances, especially given they should find good runs just off the speed. Blue-blood gelding Plymouth (2) is also right in the mix for the Hayes stable. A son of The Autumn Sun, Plymouth brings elite form lines from the Melbourne spring and was last seen finishing a close fourth in group 2 company at Flemington. He represents the class factor and should appreciate the 2000m trip. In the end though the favourite is in just too well at the weights with 54kg and really should be able to kick away and win comfortably.

WGL tips: 5 –8 –2 –11
