Botswana regulator issues Christmas warning as betting explodes
Botswana’s gambling regulator has issued a warning ahead of the festive season, cautioning the public against rising betting activity as projected losses climb toward P1 billion.
The Botswana Gambling Authority (BWA) said Gross Gambling Revenue is expected to reach P1 billion by the end of the 2024/25 financial year, stressing that the figure reflects player losses rather than operator earnings.
Acting chief executive Moruntshi Kemorwale said every pula recorded as GGR represents money wagered and not won back.
“Every pula recorded as GGR is a pula someone played and did not win back,” he warned.
December typically brings a spike in gambling as people pursue quick returns during the Christmas holiday period. The BWA said its responsible gambling helpline consistently receives more distress calls in December and January, linked to financial pressure and family conflict.
Kemorwale warned that heavy advertising, celebrity promotions and mobile betting apps can mask gambling risks. He urged people to treat betting as entertainment, not income, as social workers report gambling increasingly diverted from essentials such as food and school fees.
“Enjoy entertainment, but within limits. Avoid gambling under the influence, and seek help early if stress or conflict arises,” he said.
“The festive season brings joy and community, but also temptations that can leave lasting financial scars.”
The BWA issued 10 bookmaker licenses earlier this year, but offshore gambling, including at online casinos and international betting sites remains a problem, with this largely unmonitored by local authorities.
