Flemington Racing tips for March 28

Welcome to our Australian Cup day free tips for the 10-race card at Flemington on Saturday. While the Australia Cup is the sole group 1 race, the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes and plenty of Listed racing will take place. The Flemington track is currently rated a soft 6, but this could be downgraded further with plenty of weather about in Melbourne. Below are our Flemington tips and best bets for March 28, 2026.

Race 3

Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m)

Gin Twist (1) is the horse to beat in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes, with the Lindsay Park-trained filly impressing over 1000m in the Listed Festival Stakes at Flemington on February 28. This time with William Pike onboard, Gin Twist is likely to be the frontrunner in this field and definitely has the ability won again here. Jadzia (2.80) is also heavily backed and looms as a live chance, while Satono Glow also has claims. In a six horse field, we think this one will come down to whether Jadzia or Satono Glow can run down Gin Twist. Special mention, if you are looking for some value, to first-starter Star Je Taime (3), with the Snitzel filly having an outstanding pedigree. The money is also indicating some faith in Star Je Taime, having been backed from about 20.00 into 10.00 with NextBet.

Race 7

Listed Roy Higgins (2600m)

Litzdeel (13) is currently paying $34 to win the Melbourne Cup and is shaping as a key chance later in the year. Paying 2.45 to win the Listed Roy Higgins, LItzdeel is one of the few horses to prove himself over the journey, and is battle hardened after two previous starts this prep. Whisky On The Hill (3) has failed to beat Litzdeel in previous races and we have trouble seeing it happening here, but is a group winner. Desert Hero (10), Onesmoothoperator (8) and Paradise Storm (2) and Ardakan (9)  are also in the market. Desert Hero looms as strong value in a tight field, and we are likely to have something at around the 6.00 quote with Australian betting sites.

Race 8

Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m)

With a field packed full of talent, the Australian Cup promises to be a beauty, wth a handful of horses boasting genuine claims on the 2000m feature. Birdman (5), who will be partnered by Ben Melham, is the bookies elect and looks like he will hard to beat if he can reproduce the Blamey Stakes and Peter Young Stakes runs. Over a bit more ground Apulia (3) must be considered, after a fast-finishing second behind Birdman last start. Pride Of Jenni (10) cannot be written off and will have plenty of money riding her, with Declan Bates’ mount tried and proven over this distance. Top-weight Tom Kitten (12) has also shortened in the betting and can win this race. If we’re forced to pick, Pride Of Jenni at 8.50 looms as value, and with a run under her belt can keep on running out in front. A word of warning for the quaddie punters, go wide here, because an upset would not surprise.
