Gamble Aware set to close in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom’s top charity tackling gambling-related harms will close next year, with GambleAware set to wind down by March 31, as its work transitions to a new government-led statutory system.

The move comes following the introduction of a statutory levy and the appointment of new commissioners for gambling harms research, prevention, and treatment across England, Scotland, and Wales.

GambleAware has been previously funded by gambling operators in the United Kingdom, but with it not compulsory many chose not to contribute.

GambleAware Chair of Trustees Andy Boucher said the decision marks a major shift after years of advocacy.

“We are proud of our role in supporting tens of thousands through national campaigns and the National Gambling Support Network,” he said.

“Trustees have now agreed on a managed closure as responsibilities shift to government.”

Boucher emphasised that GambleAware will honour all existing commitments until the statutory framework is fully implemented. He urged government bodies, including NHS England and UK Research and Innovation, to build on GambleAware’s evidence-based approach and collaborative work with the lived experience community.

Since 2017, the charity has been a strong proponent of a public health-led model to address gambling harms. Its national prevention programmes and commissioned services have reached millions across Great Britain.

Baroness Twycross, Minister for Gambling, praised the charity’s legacy and said there impact could not be understated.

“GambleAware and its partners have worked tirelessly to support people affected by gambling harm,” she said.

“We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition under the new levy system, which will expand and strengthen services nationwide.”

The GambleAware website and resources will remain active to provide continued access to support during the transition period.

The United Kingdom has one of the most vibrant gambling industries in the world, with it encompassing sports betting, casino gambling, lotteries, and various land-based gambling venues.

The Gambling Commission also overseas UK online casinos and has worked hand-in-hand with GambleAware to help stamp out predatory practices from operators.
