Michigan regulator lists illegal gambling sites targeting residents

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has issued cease-and-desist orders to 45 offshore gambling operators accused of illegally targeting players in the state, in a sweeping enforcement action aimed at protecting its regulated market.

The regulator said investigations confirmed the sites were offering online casino games and sports betting to Michigan residents without a valid licence. Among the more prominent operators named were BetOnline.ag, SportsBetting.ag, Americas Card Room and bitcoin sportsbook platform bitcoinsportsbook.ag.

MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said the action sends a “clear message” that illegal operators will not be tolerated, with further enforcement expected.

“The scope of this action sends a clear message: Michigan will not tolerate illegal operators targeting our residents or undermining the lawful businesses that have invested in complying with state law,” Williams said.

“Our investigators work with unwavering focus to identify, document, and act against every unlicensed site that puts Michigan players at risk. This is an ongoing effort, and we will continue to take action against illegal gambling operators.”

Unlicensed offshore gambling sites operate outside Michigan’s regulatory framework, exposing players to risks including withheld winnings, data misuse and lack of dispute resolution. Licensed operators, by contrast, must meet strict compliance standards, including audits and responsible gambling safeguards.

The crackdown falls under Michigan’s Lawful Internet Gaming Act and Lawful Sports Betting Act, which require all operators serving in-state customers to hold MGCB approval.

Officials warned that non-compliant operators could face civil and criminal penalties, urging residents to use only licensed platforms.
