NRL round 7: Why Cowboys will halt Sea Eagles’ resurgence

Cowboys v Sea Eagles betting tips

Three weeks ago, the NRL round-seven opener between North Queensland and Manly at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on Thursday would have been seen as a ho-hum affair between two also-rans for the 2026 season.

But suddenly the Cowboys and Sea Eagles are red-hot and just can’t stop scoring and this looms as arguably the match of the round.

The Cowboys have strung together four wins against the Titans, Storm, Dragons and Broncos and have averaged north of 30 points in doing so. Meanwhile, Sea Eagles dumped coach Anthony Seibold after being humbled by the Roosters in round four, and have since piled on 80 points in thrashing the Dolphins and Dragons.

Stand-in Manly coach Kieran Foran is having a great time, but we are wary about how much of their resurgence is down to the ”sacked coach effect” and how much they have actually turned things around. I guess we will see on Thursday night.

The Sea Eagles also have a dominant recent record against the Cowboys, winning the past three clashes and seven of the past nine. In 2025, Manly won 41-12 at home in round one and backed it up with a 24-6 win in Townsville in round 11.

Of course, it’s a new-look Manly without Daly Cherry-Evans steering them around the park, while the Cowboys have hit a purple patch in recent weeks after their own sluggish start to the season.

The Cowboys are solid but backable favourites at around $1.60 to win this match with Australian betting sites.

Cowboys v Sea Eagles team news

The Cowboys suffered a blow early last week against the Broncos when prolific hooker Reed Mahoney suffered a head knock. He will miss this match though Soni Luke showed against the Broncos he is a more than capable fill-in at rake. They also bring in Braidon Burns for winger Murray Taulagi, another out with a concussion after a bruising affair against the Broncos.

Veteran prop Siosiua Taukeiaho returns for the Sea Eagles, with Nathan Brown back on the pine after overcoming ilness and resuming in the NSW Cup last weekend.

2026 NRL Premiership betting movers

Penrith remain the hottest of hot NRL title favourites at $2.60 despite suffering their first defeat of the season against the Bulldogs last week. Ivan Cleary’s team is at $2.60 with Ladbrokes Australia and then it’s daylight out to the rest; you can probably secure a minimum of double figure odds about any team winning the title aside from Penrith.

The most significant move was outwards for the perennial challengers Melbourne Storm, who have blown out to $15 on the back of a string of defeats against the Broncos, Panthers, Cowboys and Warriors. If they can’t turn things around this week against the hot and cold Raiders, it will be a long way back from the lower reaches of the ladder.

The Cowboys have surged from $41 to $23 after their gritty 35-31 win against the Broncos last Friday, while the Dogs and Warriors are also back in favour at around $13.

Cowboys v Sea Eagles betting tips

These teams are threatening to jump into the premiership race after poor starts to this NRL season, but we can’t help but feel there is more depth to the Cowboys’ resurgence.

Bookmakers believe this will be a high-scoring shootout, hence the large over/under total of 54.5 points, but after their gut-buster against the Broncos last weekend, the Cowboys will likely knuckle down to playing a more disciplined defensive style. That is our expectation anyway.

No knock on Manly; they have really dug in the past couple of weeks. But they also struggled to subdue likely wooden-spooners St George Illawarra last weekend, so they will need to step up a level to challenge North Queensland.

Broncos v Dolphins tip

Cowboys by 10 points.

Broncos v Dolphins Suggested Bet
  • Cowboys -4.5 points / match total under 54.5 points at $3.75 with Australian betting sites.
  • Jason Saab (Manly) to score a try at any time at around $2.05. He makes a habit of scoring against the Cowboys.
