The build-up to the clash has been marred by Tuesday morning’s tribunal hearing for GWS star Toby Greene, who was rubbed out for three games after making contact with an umpire during the three-quarter time break of their win over Sydney on Saturday.
Greene’s suspension has seen the Giants’ odds blow out from $2.80 to $3.12, with the immensely talented small forward their best player and arguably the best in the game. The Cats odds have shortened into $1.37 after being as long as $1.55 on Monday.

Geelong have concerns of their own, following a horrific capitulation to Port Adelaide, with the most concerning aspect the meek effort of their midfield, which was beaten up by the Power. Players such as Cam Guthrie, Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood were all well below their best.
The Giants survived a Lance Franklin-inspired scare to defeat the Swans by one point, with their late season surge sure to have the Cats on edge. The Giants’ much vaunted midfield was magnificent in the opening half, while their recruit Jesse Hogan was a constant threat all day.
The two clubs last met in round 21 when the Giants beat the Cats in Geelong, in one of the upsets of the season, which was highlighted by a best-on-ground performance from Greene and the Cats’ inaccuracy in front of goal in the second half.
The Cats are likely to regain Zach Toohey (hamstring) following his injury, but Irishman Mark O’Connor re-injured his hamstring against the Power and could be out for the season. The Cats are also weighing up a selection stunner with Tom Stewart making a case to play after a foot injury, although we expect they will take the cautious route.
Greene will miss the remainder of the season, even if the Giants make the grand final, following his suspension, while Isaac Cumming, Tom Green and Sam Reid are in doubt after suffering minor injuries in the win over the Swans. Adam Kennedy is racing to return from a hamstring strain suffered in training last week.

Geelong deserve to be given another chance here, despite the way they lost to the Power and undoubtedly the suspension of Greene has swung the game in their favour. It is a massive blow to the Cats that they won’t play a final in Victoria this season, but we can’t see the Perth fixture hurting them, with GWS also on the road. Really, when a team has strung together a season as consistent as Geelong’s, it would be disrespectful not to back them in, despite their poor recent finals history.
