AFL round 16 odds and fixture

Welcome to our AFL round 16 odds update, fixture release and early tips for what promises to be a bumper round of action.

Some AFL matches including Thursday night’s Gold Coast v Richmond clash are up in the air as Australia deals with the latest Covid-19 outbreak, which is severely impacting NSW and will force at least the Sydney clubs on to the road.

This means some fixtures may not be finalised until Tuesday, with the AFL indicating games may need to be moved to appease state governments.

Gold Coast will sense an opportunity against a wounded Richmond in the first game of AFL round 16 being played on Thursday night at Metricon Stadium.

The Suns are rank outsiders in the betting, priced at $5 to win, but they will take heart from the Tigers’ 40-point shellacking at the hands of St Kilda last Friday night. While betting on this Queensland fixture had been suspended at time of publishing, the Tigers were paying $1.20 the win.

The Tigers were beaten by a harder, more disciplined outfit and they have never looked more vulnerable without  spearhead Tom Lynch, with Callum Coleman-Jones, Mabior Chol and Jack Riewoldt all struggling to have an impact.

The Suns’ loss to North Melbourne on Saturday was equally as disappointing and powerbrokers on the Gold Coast must be beginning to question Stuart Dew’s reign.

On Friday night, Geelong ($1.23) will host Essendon ($4.20) in Geelong under lights, in what looms as a battle between the hardened Cats and young Dons. The Cats were thumped by the Brisbane Lions but will enjoy returning to their home deck, while Essendon was brave but ultimately fell short against ladder leader Melbourne.

Four matches will be played on Saturday, with the first being Melbourne ($1.15) and the Giants ($5.50) from the MCG, with this clash due to start at 1.45pm. The Demons are heavy favourite to win, but the Giants will be smarting after their disappointing loss to Hawthorn.

Adelaide will host the twilight fixture against rampaging Brisbane, who will be confident of a hit-and-run mission to Adelaide, after the Crows’ disappointing showing against Carlton.  There are no odds for this clash released at this point.

Fremantle and Carlton will lock horns in Perth, with both teams needing to keep winning to keep their finals hopes alive. The Dockers will be the bookies favourite but the Blues showed signs things are beginning to click in their win over Adelaide.

Hawthorn ($3.72) will host Port Adelaide ($1.28), with the Hawks not expected to pose a serious challenge to the finals-bound Power. The Hawks will be sweating on the injury to Chad Wingard, who was subbed out of their win over the GWS.

On Sunday, old rivals Sydney ($1.89) and West Coast ($1.95) will play in the early game, with both teams having genuine claims on favouritism. The Swans were gallant in their 10-point loss to the Power last outing, but the Eagles were horrible in their loss to the Bulldogs.

Collingwood ($1.75) will attempt to win their first game under Robert Harvey when they clash with St Kilda ($2.10) at the MCG. The Magpies were flat against Fremantle and surely will abandon the often tried three giants strategy (when Mason Cox, Darcy Cameron and Brodie Grundy all play). They will be boosted by the return of gun Jordan De Goey from suspension.

AFL round 16 will conclude with the Western Bulldogs ($1.03) hosting North Melbourne ($12.50) at Marvel Stadium with the home team the raging favourite to win. The line in this clash has been set at 50.5 at Australian bookmakers, which is staggering given the Roos won their last outing.
