England top ICC World Cup 2019 betting, despite Ireland showing

ICC world cup head to head odds

DESPITE a stuttering practice match, England remains favourite in ICC World Cup betting, with the tournament due to kick off early next month.

England’s odds have shortened into 2-1 with most leading cricket betting sites, with India 11-4 and Australia 4-1 rounding out the top three chances.

England has been rocked by the suspension of talented one-day player Alex Hales following an off-field incident, while they narrowly escaped in their practice game against Ireland on Sunday.

After bowling Ireland out for 196, England was jittery on its way to beating the total six wickets down, in the 42nd over of the 45-over match.

At one point England was 6-101 before keeper Ben Foakes (61 from 76) and youngster Tom Curran (47 from 56) saved the day.

Hales would have been a back-up batsman in the brilliant England ODI squad, but teammates have grown frustrated with his off-field antics.

Despite the absence of the heavy hitter, England will still boast one of the most powerful batting line-ups, while their seam bowlers also thrive in the conditions.

Australia tunes up for World Cup with NZ matches

Reigning 50-over champion Australia has also began its final preparation for the World Cup, with a training camp and three practice matches being played against New Zealand in Queensland.

There is keen interest in the Aussies’ preparations, with ex-skipper Steve Smith and David Warner suiting up in the green and gold for the first time since their infamous ball-tampering incident in South Africa.

Warner returned to professional cricket with a blistering Indian Premier League performance, where he blasted 690 runs in 12 T20 knocks.

Smith was more subdued in his performance in the IPL, but as the tournament wore on, began to hit his straps, finishing with more than 300 runs. A slight scare surrounding his injured shoulder while fielding in the IPL has been allayed with Smith taking part in the first practice match.

The first practice match, played on Monday, May 6, also marked the first competitive hit-out in three months for fiery quick Mitchell Starc, who has overcome a pectoral muscle complaint in time to be fit for the ICC 50 Over World Cup.

India suffers injury blow on eve of Cup

India is looming as an underdog at the World Cup despite being the top-ranked one-day team, with its lacklustre form away from the subcontinent a concern for punters.

The Indians have also copped an injury blow in the IPL with Kedar Jadhav hurting a shoulder while playing for the Chennai Super Kings. While officials are hopeful he will be healthy for the Indians’ first match on June 5, players that will come into contention are Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel.

Most of the Indian players are playing in the IPL which has led to growing concerns about their preparation for the ICC World Cup 2019. India has two practice matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh in England and Wales ahead of the cup.

Windies gaining momentum

West Indies openers Shai Hope, a favourite of the worldgamblinglist.com, and John Campbell have broken the record for an ODI opening stand in their 196-run victory over Ireland, in a World Cup lead-up game.

The 12-1-priced Windies are gathering momentum ahead of the World Cup and the latest showing against Ireland has put them firmly into betting calculations.

Hope (170) and Campbell (179) put on 365 for the first wicket, as they got hold of the Irish bowlers, who were buoyant following a promising performance against England.

The huge opening knock was just five runs shy of fellow West Indies stars Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels all-time best ODI partnership in 2015.
