Welcome to our free Morphettville racing tips and South Australian Derby preview, for Saturday, May 9, 2020.

For a second consecutive week the racing world will turn its attention to the picturesque Adelaide track, this time for the $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m).

The SA Derby, which has been won by the likes of Zabeelionaire (2012), Mummify (2003) and Sub Zero (1992), is run over 2500m and features a few classy types.

Dalasan is the $3.10 favourite with Unibet to win the South Australian Derby, but there is plenty of love in the betting for Russian Camelot and Warning, who are both around the $4 quote.

Remember, because of the covid-19 virus the Morphettville races will be run without any crowds in attendance, much like other key Australian racing meetings.

Other feature races being run at Morphettville on Saturday include the benchmark 75 Provincial Super Series final, which has had 14 heats run since March 6; the listed Adelaide Guineas and the SA Super Sprint Series final as well as the Group 3 South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Morphettville, race 2: TAB SA Sires’ Produce Stakes, 12.06pm local time (1400m)

The talented filly 7.Ecumenical is a hot favourite to continue on her winning ways and that’s understandable. She has won three of her four starts including the last two at listed and then Group 3 level. She has the measure of many of the rivals she has faced before, though we think 9.Violinist has plenty of upside after sticking on well for fourth behind Ecumenical at her first start a fortnight ago. 3.Indictment is a promising colt which brings a different formline and he has obviously been set for this race, though he is yet to break through for a win.

Best tip: We like Violinist at healthy odds of around $8 with Unibet. She is beautifully bred and gets the blinkers on here, plus she is to be ridden this time by gun jockey Damien Thornton, fresh off his maiden Group 1 win on our tip Toffee Tongue at this track last Saturday.

Morphettville tips, race 6: Adelaide Guineas, 2.41pm local time (1600m)

This is a cracking race for three-year-olds with a handful of untapped but highly promising types engaged. Bookmakers have made 6. Kooweerup  a firm favourite and she stormed home for third in a good race over 1400m at Flemington last start. She has the scope to go on to big things in the spring but there are others in this race who could do likewise. We are wary of a couple of well-bred types by Not A Single Doubt at big odds here. 9.Balaabel has the blinkers off for the first time, while 12.Night Passage can improve sharply. They are both from the canny McEvoy stable.

Best bet: Try the McEvoy pair Balaabel and Night Passage each-way at big odds. The McEvoys also have 2.Game Keeper engaged at good odds and that gelding is racing in great form.

Morphettville, race 8: TAB SA Derby, 4.01pm local time (2500m)

The brilliant 1.Dalasan has won four out of four at this track and seven of his 14 starts overall and has contested some hot races against the best three-year-olds in the country. He is a top-class colt and the distance should not be a problem as his father won an Arc de Triomphe and his mother was second in a Tasmanian Oaks. He has the locals covered in this Group 1 race, which leaves the visiting brigade from Sydney and Melbourne trainers. 2. Warning has already won a VRC Derby and run sixth in the ATC Derby in Sydney. Warning stormed home for third behind Dalasan two weeks ago and will relish the extra distance. He is rock hard fit and has Thornton aboard. 4.Russian Camelot has loads of ability but has plenty to learning, having had only four starts. He is the wildcard.

Our tip: Warning is an each-way bet to nothing at around $4 with Unibet. It’s hard to see him missing a place. We also expect the filly 14.Zayydani to run a much-improved race at big odds of around 25-1. The further the better for her and she is worth throwing into your multiples.
