New Zealand v Pakistan betting tips, prediction & odds; 2nd Test preview

England v New Zealand first Test

Welcome to our New Zealand v Pakistan betting tips, prediction and odds analysis for the 2nd Test at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, from Sunday, January 3.

New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series with their 101-run win in a wonderful first Test at Bay Oval, but Pakistan could take heart from how they bravely batted to save the match on the final day.

Batsman Fawad Alam was outstanding with his century in the second dig and stand-in captain Mohammad Rizwan led from the front with a second-innings 60.

But their top order of Shan Masood, Abid Ali and Azhar Ali needs plenty more runs if they are to be competitive in the second Test.

Captain Babar Azam (broken thumb) will be given until match day to prove his fitness and if he can return, Haris Solhail is likely to make way.

New Zealand are provisionally sitting first in the ICC Test rankings and victory in the second Test would put them in great shape to finish in the top two of the World Test Championship and contest the final at Lord’s in London.

Black Caps paceman Neil Wagner bowled for much of the first Test with two broken toes and performed admirably after plenty of painkilling injections. Wagner has been ruled out of the second Test and his replacement is likely to be fit-again paceman Matt Henry.

That is expected to be the only change to a team that has built a formidable record in recent years.

New Zealand v Pakistan betting tips

Our cricket tipsters have examined the odds and found several New Zealand v Pakistan tips for the second Test.

Tim Southee man of the match at $10

The big paceman has a great Test record at this ground in recent season, as does his opening-ball partner Trent Boult. Southee has also made valuable runs here against good opposition so that gives him a slight edge for us. We expect he will prove a real handful early for the struggling Pakistan top order.

Fawad Alam top run-scorer Pakistan first innings

The 35-year-old has scored more runs in first-class cricket than any other Pakistan batsman; the problem he has faced is that he was overlooked for the Test team for roughly a decade. It seems a crying shame now after watching his gritty century on the last day of the first Test. Fawad seems great value here at $6 with Unibet to top the run-scorers with Azam in doubt and the Pakistan top order out of touch.

New Zealand v Pakistan prediction 3/1/2021

The weather forecast is pretty clear until the scheduled final day of this Test but we expect the rampant Kiwis to have the win sewn up by then. They are deservedly now ranked as one of the best teams in all three forms of the game, ;ed by a superstar in Kane Williamson. It is a sort of quiet, golden generation of New Zealand cricket that perhaps has not yet received the accolades they deserve. The only blot on their recent copybook is a Test series thrashing in Australia and a loss in a ODI World Cup final that probably should have been a win. Our final New Zealand v Pakistan prediction? New Zealand just look too strong across the board on one of their happiest hunting grounds.
