The Everest 2020: Randwick sprint runner by runner guide and tip

The Everest 2020 runner-by-runner guide

Welcome to our The Everest runner-by-runner guide and tips, which will give you clear insight into Australia’s richest horse race. The 2020 Everest will take place on Saturday, October 17 at Randwick racecourse and feature many of the top sprinters.

What is The Everest horse race?

The Everest is the world’s richest horse race on turf, and is run over 1200 metres at Randwick in Sydney each October as part of the Sydney Spring Carnival. The race is run at weight-for-age and boasts $A14 million in prizemoney as at 2020.

It features an unusual entry system whereby 12 slot-holders pay $600,000 each and then can enter their own runner or lease their place to someone else. They can also strike deals with the owners of the best sprinters at the time to make available their slots and share in any prizemoney.

The Everest was first run in 2017 and is a huge source of irritation to Victorian racing officialdom as it is in direct competition for horses and riders with its world-famous Melbourne Spring Carnival.

What horse will win the 2020 The Everest?

We have woken our resident big-race expert ”Magic Mike” from his slumber to run the rule over the 12 combatants for the 2020 Everest at Randwick on Saturday, October 17.

1 NATURE STRIP
(Trainer: Chris Waller. Jockey: James McDonald. Barrier:  5. Weight: 58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: Enigmatic sprinter which at his best can be breathtaking but has been plain in two runs back this campaign. Ran fourth in this race last year behind Yes Yes Yes and is among the favourites this time. From the stable of Australian’s top trainer and also ridden by one of the best jockeys in the world, so would not surprise if he produced his best and won the big prize.
UniBet odds: $4.80

2 TREKKING
(Trainer: James Cummings.  Jockey: Joshua Parr. Barrier:   4. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: Tough sprinter which is a group 1 winner in the Goodwood Handicap in Adelaide and ran third in the 2019 The Everest. Always been just a touch short of the highest-quality sprinters and we think that will be the case again.
UniBet odds: $11

3 CLASSIQUE LEGEND
(Trainer: Les Bridge.  Jockey:  Kerrin McEvoy. Barrier:   6. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: Lightly raced galloper which is yet to win at the highest level and was sixth in this race last year at around $16. Has two-time Everest winner McEvoy in the saddle, and should get the perfect trail from gate six. But he would not want to be conceding too big a start in this race.
UniBet odds: $4.80

4 SANTA ANA LANE
(Trainer: Anthony & Sam Freedman.  Jockey:  Sam Clipperton. Barrier:   8. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: At one time this galloper with the brilliant finish was the best sprinter in the country and he has notched five group 1 wins. He was a flashing second to Yes Yes Yes last year and arguably should have won. But the gelding has not win since the group 1 TJ Smith Stakes in Appril 2019 and his best looks to be behind win. Any rain around would help.
UniBet odds: $26

5 BEHEMOTH
(Trainer: David Jolly.  Jockey:  Nash Rawiller. Barrier:   2. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: A group 1 winner at his past two starts, both over 1400m at Caulfield. The 1200m at Randwick plays a bit like a 1400m race. This son of All Too Hard should be charging home but might find a couple of these too quick.
UniBet odds: $9

6 BIVOUAC
(Trainer: James Cummings.  Jockey:  Glen Boss. Barrier:   10. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: This explosive son of Exceed And Excel has last year’s winning jockey Glen Boss in the saddle and has purposely been kept very fresh for this, which is how he races best. Primed to explode in the straight and this is our clear-cut value runner at $15 each-way.
UniBet odds: $15

7 GYTRASH
(Trainer: Gordon Richards.  Jockey:  Jason Collett. Barrier:   7. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: A really underrated sprinter who has won at the highest level. Just does not run a bad race and from 20 starts has nine wins and 10 placings. And also would not hurt the Lope De Vega gelding’s chances if the track is softened up with a little rain. Should get a good run just behind the pace and a great chance of finishing top four.
UniBet odds: $6

8 EDUARDO
(Trainer: Joseph Pride.  Jockey:  Ms Rachel King. Barrier:   9. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: This speedster could throw a spanner in the works for Nature Strip as will probably charge forward early from a wide gate and pester that Everest fancy. A tough galloper but just lacks the class to finish off these.
UniBet odds: $21

9 DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR
(Trainer: Tony & Calvin McEvoy.  Jockey:  Tim Clark. Barrier:   1. Weight:  58.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: Bit of a shock to us to see this eight-year-old in the field as a late call-up when Golden Slipper Farnan was forced to miss a lead-up run and could not make it. Dollar For Dollar is an honest type but it would be a major shock if he even runs a place.
UniBet odds: $61

10 TOFANE
(Trainer: Michael Moroney.  Jockey:  Tommy Berry. Barrier:   11. Weight:  56.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: This mare was explosive to win the All Aged Stakes over 1400m at this track in the autumn. She is lightly raced and if she hits a peak a placing is not out of the question but we are happy to bet around her this time as she was plain last start at Flemington as favourite.
UniBet odds: $21

11 LIBERTINI
(Trainer: Anthony Cummings.  Jockey:  Regan Bayliss. Barrier:   12. Weight:  56.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: This one-time boom galloper had a season of disappointment but she was back to her brilliant best after a long spell when winning over this track and distance in the Premiere Stakes on October 3. If she can reproduce that run the daughter of I Am Invincble would be right in the mix, although she will need luck from the outside barrier.
UniBet odds: $9.50

12 HAUT BRION HER
(Trainer:  Chris Waller.  Jockey:  Brenton Avdulla. Barrier:   3. Weight:  56.5kg).

What the World Gambling List says: Gun trainer, gun jockey and she is still untapped. But this mare would have to go to a whole new level to match motors with some of the big guns in the betting.
UniBet odds: $31

Reserves:

13 DEPRIVE (Trainer: James Cummings. Weight:  58.5kg).

14 SPECIAL REWARD (Trainer: Kris Lees. . Weight:  58.5kg).

15 STANDOUT (Trainer: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou. . Weight:  58.5kg).

16 TACTICAL ADVANTAGE (Trainer: Kris Lees. Weight:  58.5kg).
