Collingwood v GWS betting tips - AFL round 3

Welcome to our Collingwood v GWS betting tips and winner prediction for their AFL round 3 clash at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

The Magpies have been installed a 1.50 favourite with Australian betting sites to defeat the Giants (2.60), despite having to travel across Melbourne for their home fixture.

The Collingwood-GWS line has been set at 13.5 points, while the over/under mark is at 176.5.

Collingwood has opened their season with one win and one loss, but many sunk the boot in, questioning their ageing list, after the narrow loss to Adelaide on the road.

They will be boosted here by the inclusion of captain Darcy Moore and veteran defender Jeremy Howe, bringing in some much needed relief to help with Jesse Hogan and potentially Aaron Cadman.

The Magpies will blood young ruckman Oscar Steene, who has been on their list for several years, but is yet to crack it for a senior game.

The injury-hit Giants will also receive some reinforcements in the form of Cadman and exciting smalls Toby Bedford and Brent Daniels, who have overcome their injury complaints. They have also included 2024 no.18 draft pick Oliver Hannaford for his first match after a dominant VFL display.

The Giants began their season with a rousing win over Hawthorn at home, but since have been thrashed by Western Bulldogs, and lost a close one St Kilda. They are missing stars including Sam Taylor, Josh Kelly, Tom Green and Jack Buckley.

Collingwood v GWS betting tips

WGL’s AFL betting expert has assessed the markets and found some value Collingwood v GWS tips:

Jamie Elliott 3+ goals

The star Magpie was ill against the Crows and failed to have a major impact and spent large chunks of the game on the bench. The Pies need their leading goal-kicker to fire here. He plays well fresh and is offering some nice value to kick 3+ goals at 2.55.

Jesse Hogan 3+ goals

The Magpies were put to the sword by Adelaide tall Riley Thilthorpe and Hogan, a Coleman Medallist, will be eying a bag of goals for himself despite the Pies bolstered defence. You could do worse than chucking both talls — Hogan and Cadman — into a multi for multiple goals.

Over/Under betting tip

Take the unders with confidence here. While the opening rounds of the season have been punctuated by aggressive ball movement and not much defence, the Magpies have bucked this trend and are still hard to score against, despite their lack of personnel down back. The Pies have only reached the “over” mark in one of their last 11 games. We’re expecting a close, dour clash here.

Finn Callaghan 30+ possessions

In the corresponding fixture last year, the Giants midfielder put the Magpies to the sword with a dominant display in his team’s big win. With no Tom Green (although Clayton Oliver is a handy replacement) he will need to fire again here. Will he be the man to get the checking skills of Harry Perryman? Very possibly, but the 2.70 odds with BetRight (BetRight review) are too tempting for us.

Collingwood v GWS prediction

Collingwood cannot afford to lose their captain Darcy Moore for extended periods. We were not impressed with the Moore-less Pies against Adelaide and if he wasn’t returning we’d tip the Giants in an upset here. While we think the odds are tilted too heavily in the Pies favour, we think they will win in a close one, against a team struggling for form and fit players. Our final Magpies v Giants prediction? Collingwood by 12 points.
