Welcome to our Melbourne v GWS tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL round 16 clash at the MCG on Saturday.
The Demons v Giants bout will kick off at 1.45pm and will then be followed by Fremantle v Carlton at the same ground, following fixture changes because of the latest Covid outbreak.
The Giants have lost their last two games against the Demons, with the last clash a 34-point round 3 loss at Manuka Oval, which came despite Toby Greene booting five majors.
Melbourne fought out an 11-point win against Essendon last round with usual suspects such as Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver the catalysts. They are now a game ahead of the Western Bulldogs on the top of the ladder, but have a significantly worse percentage so need to keep winning if they want the minor premiership.
The Giants blew a golden opportunity to leapfrog Richmond into eighth last round, when they dropped their clash against Hawthorn, in an exceptionally underwhelming performance. The Giants midfield was completely non-functional and they struggled to connect with their forward line.
They have recalled ruck barometer Shane Mumford and young midfielder Tom Green for this clash, which should add some more starch to their outfit. They have also included Lachie Ash, who was outstanding against the Demons earlier in the year, after he was the medical sub last round. Sam Reid, Matt de Boer and Kieren Briggs have been dropped.
Melbourne is yet to name a replacement for former skipper and medical sub Nathan Jones, who has injured a calf and cannot be considered for this match.

Our AFL betting expert has assessed the markets and found some value Melbourne v GWS tips:
Melbourne and GWS promises to be a physical battle between two outstanding midfields. Given the clash is going to be played in wintry, rainy conditions we think the 154.5 over/under mark is generous and we’re happy to go with the lower option here. We just can’t see these two teams kicking enough goals to challenge it, given the Giants will attempt to make it into a scrap.
Melbourne might have lost just two games in 2021, but their last two outings have been less than convincing (a loss to Collingwood and a narrow win over Essendon) and we think they will be pushed all the way here. The GWS +29.5 option is paying $2 with Topsport and looks to be the way to go in our opinion. A great leg to anchor your same game multis.
Melbourne thoroughly deserve favouritism for this clash because they have been so much more consistent than GWS. While we’re not convinced the Demons’ best is better than other teams, they have produced a consistently high standard, other than a few lapses. We just can’t see the Giants kicking enough points to seriously challenge the Demons in Melbourne this time. Our final Melbourne v GWS prediction? Demons by 10 points.
