Sydney Roosters were upstaged by Newcastle in their season opener, while the Sea Eagles were not good enough to get near the Panthers at BlueBet Stadium. Both teams were a little disappointing, but the Roosters especially so.
The Roosters thrashed Manly 46-4 in the corresponding match at the SCG in round one last season, but where then similarly thrashed 42-6 by Manly when they met in a final at Mackay.
That pretty much tells the tale of their 2021 seasons as the Sea Eagles started slowly and were outstanding later in the year, while the wheels came off for the Roosters thanks largely to injuries.
This match will be early indication of where these teams might aspire to later in the season.
The Roosters have named lock forward Victor Radley and centre Billy Smith to start despite the pair suffering head knocks against the Knights last weekend.
Manly regain veteran utility Dylan Walker to the squad.
Kick-off: 8.05pm local time

Head to head odds: Roosters $1.88, Manly $1.95
Line: Roosters (-1 points) $1.90, Manly (+1 points) $1.90
Match total: 40.5 points: over $1.90, under $1.90
Our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for Friday night’s game.
The Manly flyer could not get off the mark against the Panthers last week but he has a phenomenal overall try-scoring record. He looms as the man most likely to finish off the good work of the Sea Eagles’ quality back line.
This double is paying around $3.60 with leading bookie TopSport. Manly were largely stifled by the powerhouse defence of the Panthers last weekend but they should find more space this time around. If they can click into gear they might be too powerful.
All the money has been for Manly in the lead-up to this game and we can see why. They were not too bad in their loss to the Panthers, while the Roosters were sluggish in their reversal against what most pundits think is a middling Knights team. We think Manly’s back line will prove the difference. Our Roosters v Sea Eagles prediction: Sea Eagles by 10 points.
