Can Geelong recruit Jeremy Cameron recover in time for the finals? AFL round 17 odds update

Port Adelaide and Melbourne will open round 17 of the AFL in what looms as a blockbuster of the highest order on Thursday night.

While much of the AFL fixture for round 17 is yet to be released because of the uncertainty surrounding Covid restrictions, the Power-Demons clash has been locked in at the Adelaide Oval.

Port Adelaide tuned up for the Melbourne clash with a 34-point victory over Hawthorn in Melbourne on Saturday night, with this performance highlighted by Ollie Wines’ 43 possessions and Charlie Dixon’s four majors.

Melbourne fell from the top of the ladder on Saturday afternoon when they lost to GWS by nine points, their second loss in three matches, with it again a case of struggling to score.

Adelaide and Essendon clash on Friday night clash with the Bombers a hot favourite at $1.48 with Australian bookmakers, and the Crows priced around $2.65.

In Saturday’s early game, Hawthorn will host Fremantle at the University of Tasmania in what looms as an interesting battle. The Hawks have ruled out star forward Jack Gunston for the remainder of the season, while the Dockers must win to keep their finals charge alive.

Carlton has won successive games but face their toughest test in several games when they host Geelong at the MCG from 4.35pm. The Blues will be buoyed by the form of Paddy Dow and Adam Kennedy as they continue the fight to save David Teague’s coaching career.

The Cats will be without gun recruit Jeremy Cameron, who injured a hamstring last outing.

Brisbane and St Kilda are likely to play their Saturday night fixture in NSW, but the AFL is yet to confirm the venue, because of the Covid breakout in Sydney. The Lions’ 52-point shellacking of Adelaide last outing highlighted their improvement in 2021, but the Saints are beginning to hit their straps with successive wins over Richmond and Collingwood.

The early Sunday game with scheduling still to be confirmed is GWS v Gold Coast, while Western Bulldogs and Sydney play at Marvel Stadium, with Collingwood v Richmond from the MCG at 4.10pm.

Monday night football will return this round with West Coast due to host North Melbourne at Optus Stadium from 7.40pm. The Eagles must beat the lowly Roos or they will run the risk of missing finals, after the AFL world was shocked by their 92-point loss to Sydney last outing.
