Crown Perth guide and review

Crown Perth

Crown Perth is the no.1 gambling venue in Western Australia and an important driver of tourism, entertainment and tax revenue for the state. Crown Perth has been open for over 30 years and features upwards of 30 real money tables and 2000 electronic gaming machines.

Crown Perth is not just a gambling venue, with the complex also featuring Western Australia’s only five star accommodation and another hotel, over 30 restaurants, nightclubs, a theatre and many other recreational areas. It really is a must-visit place and a highlight of gambling in Australia.

Our Crown Perth guide will run you through all the aspects of this Crown Resorts-owned WA gambling venue.

Pokies at Crown Perth

Crown Perth boasts over 2000 electronic gaming machines, with these some of the most popular titles at the casino. Many of the pokies games available are supplied by Aristocrat Leisure with these including smash hits like Where’s the Gold and 5 Dragons.

Remarkably Crown Perth holds a monopoly on poker machines in Australia’s largest state, meaning if you want to play slots you will have to do it here. This means you won’t find poker machines at pubs and clubs in Western Australia, although there has been recent pushes to have them introduced.

Poker machine revenue at Crown Perth is massive and probably the biggest economic driver in the business.

Crown Perth history

Crown Perth, originally known as the Burswood Island Casino, opened in December 1985 after extensive remediation of the former landfill site on Burswood Island.

When it first launched, Crown Perth was Australia’s largest casino and among the largest globally, although this has changed significantly since these early days.

Developed by Dallas Dempster and Malaysia’s Genting Berhad, it debuted as a full-scale entertainment precinct with a resort casino, hotel, convention centre, theatre, and sporting facilities.

Through the late 1980s and ’90s, additional amenities followed, such as the Burswood Dome (1987–2012), rope-in national events like the Hopman Cup, and nightlife venues. In 2003, PBL acquired the complex, initiating major refurbishments in 2002 and a $750 million overhaul in 2012 when it also rebranded it “Crown Perth”.

In December 2016, the luxurious six‑star Crown Towers was unveiled, adding 500 rooms and elevating the complex into a world-class integrated resort.

Crown Casino has faced several major scandals, particularly surrounding allegations of money laundering and ties to organized crime. In 2021, a royal commission in Western Australia found Crown Perth unfit to hold a casino licence, citing failures in governance, risk management, and anti-money laundering controls.

Similar inquiries in New South Wales and Victoria (Crown Melbourne) exposed how Crown facilitated high-roller junket tours linked to criminal syndicates and allowed large cash deposits with little oversight. These revelations led to executive resignations, fines, and reforms, and ultimately the gambling venue was allowed to keep its license.

The Western Australian Government announced that Crown Perth had been found suitable to maintain its casino licence on July 7, 2025. Crown released a statement saying this decision was a testament to the hard work they had put in to get the venue up to the standards expected.

“Holding a casino licence means holding a social licence – and we have a responsibility to operate with the highest level of integrity every day. With our improved culture, processes, and industry-leading standards, we are well-placed to continue delivering a safe and responsible environment for our guests,” Crown Perth CEO Brian Pereira said at the time.

Crown Perth also announced a partnership with West Coast Eagles AFL star Harley Reid in mid-2025, with the young midfielder set to be an ambassador for the giant gambling company.
