Welcome to our Melbourne v GWS tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL…
Welcome to our Collingwood v Hawthorn betting tips and winner prediction for their AFL round 12 clash at the MCG on Friday night.
The ladder leading Magpies are $1.58 favourites to defeat the Hawks ($2.35), with the line set at a narrow 8.5 points by AFL betting sites.
Collingwood will regain a bevy of stars for this encounter, with Scott Pendlebury, Bobby Hill, Steele Sidebottom, Darcy Moore and Lachie Shultz all in line for a recall to the team that whipped North Melbourne.
The Magpies will lose tough defender Brayden Maynard for at least one week because of a plantar fascia injury, while Oleg Markov and Will Parker could be among the unlucky players to be dropped.
Hawthorn has a relatively clean bill of health with Luke Bruest pushing his claim for a recall after missing a fortnight with a back injury, while ruckman Ned Reeves is on the mend from a corked glute.
The Hawks are smarting after being soundly beaten by reigning premier Brisbane, who had far too much firepower and ability to break the lines for their Victorian counterpart.

Newcombe needs to lift if the Hawks are to defeat the Magpies. Both Newcombe and James Worpel struggled against the Lions as their midfield was soundly beaten last match, and if this happens against the dangerous Magpies they will lose again. The Magpies don’t tend to tag in the traditional sense, instead putting a player like Steele Sidebottom in a run-with role, where they will try to shut down the opposition star’s space. We think Newcome, after recording 23 touches last week, is a lock at the MCG to reach 25+.
Finn Maginness did a number on Nick Daicos a few years ago, in a match that ultimately saw the Pies star injured, but the Hawks tagger has failed to fire this year. While he’s likely to be given first crack at the magnificent Daicos, like we saw last week with his 28 disposals in the second half, even with heavy attention he can rack up huge amounts of disposals. We’re willing to include both Nick and Josh Daicos for 25+ in this encounter.
The Hawks need their star small forward to fire in this clash and his task will be made easier without the hard-nosed Maynard in the line-up. With Watson now likely to be minded by Isaac Qaynor, his job won’t be any easier, but as a primary target of the Hawks, two goals looks a solid tip in this one. Ex-Magpie Jack Ginnivan also looms as a popular pick, after he put his old team to the sword early last season.
Collingwood is flying and while the Hawks are sixth on the ladder, they are not in good form, and are seriously missing their star man Will Day. With the Magpies’ inclusions and the talent they are dropping for this clash, it’s hard seeing any complacency creeping in. While we think the margin will be close in the end, taking the Magpies 1-39 looms as our key bet on this one. Our final Collingwood v Hawthorn prediction? Magpies by 11 points.
