NRL Round 6, 2022, starts on Thursday, April 7, with the Canberra Raiders hosting North Queensland at GIO Stadium. We take an early look at a big week ahead in the NRL.

The Raiders are hot favourites at $1.57 to beat the Cowboys ($2.40) but we could not launch into the home team at that price given both teams are sitting 2-3 and have not been inspired in the early part of the season.

There are two matches scheduled for Good Friday, but the clear match of the round is the Saturday night match-up between the Melbourne Storm and Cronulla, who loom as the big improvers this season.

The Storm have been flying along as well and they are rated $1.38 favourites against the Sharks ($3.05), and this match will answer questions around just how far the Sharks might go this season, under new coach Craig Fitzgibbon.

The St George-Illawarra v Newcastle Knights clash is the pick of the two matches on Sunday, with both teams desperate for a win to put themselves back in the finals mix.

This round features an Easter Monday clash, though bookies don’t think it will be much of a contest. Parramatta are the $1.06 favourites against derby rivals the Wests Tigers ($9), who have yet to win a game this season.

The Tigers appeal with the 21.5 points start, though, as they have been showing signs of fight in their most recent matches.

NRL Premiership odds before Round 6, 2022

As we head into round six, it’s clear the bookmakers (and punters for that matter) believe there are only seven teams with a realistic chance of lifting the 2022 NRL title.

Souths sit seventh in title betting with leading Aussie sportsbook TopSport at $12, then there is a gaping gap in the market out to Gold Coast, Canberra and NZ Warriors at $51. Of that trio, we believe the only value lies with Gold Coast, but even then they are extremely unlikely to improve enough to challenge the top handful of teams.

Of course, at the top of betting Penrith continue to firm as they remain the only undefeated team, with the Melbourne Storm hot on their heels with only one loss to date.

Probably the team causing the most waves among the top seven is the Cronulla Sharks, who also have dropped only one match and look far more menacing this season under new coach Craig Fitzgibbon, who had so much success as an assistant coach at the Roosters.

The Sharks were in from $12 to $9.50 after their impressive weekend win and have overtaken Manly ($10 to $11) in title betting.

Souths were $13 to $12 even though star fullback Latrell Mitchell is likely to miss multiple matches with a hamstring problem.
