NRL round 16 schedule, 2021 title odds update
This is a clash between two of the big guns of the NRL for the past decade, with both teams featuring players backing up from the State of Origin clash on Sunday.
But bookies do not expect this to be even close with the the Storm riding a 12-match winning streak and sitting atop the NRL ladder while the Roosters have regrouped after an injury crisis and are sitting in fifth place,
The Tricolours need a shock win here to remain within striking distance of a place in the top four, which guarantees a double chance come finals time.
Melbourne have won the past three matches between these teams, including a 20-4 win when they met earlier this season in round 6.
Young Roosters halfback Sam Walker is back after missing a couple of weeks with a shoulder injury, meaning Lachlan Lam goes back to No.6. Joseph Manu reverts from five-eighth to centre.
They also regain tough second-rower Sitili Tupouniua after a foot problem, while their Blues stars James Tedesco and Angus Crichton have been named to play.
The Storm are boosted by the return of the Jesse Bromwich (elbow) and Kenny Bromwich (ribs), but lose towering prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona to suspension and Back-rower Tom Eisenhuth to an elbow injury.
Yong hooker hooker Harry Grant (hamstring) was unable to take his place for Queensland and will miss several weeks for the Storm, who have four players backing up from Origin.
Kick-off: 7.50pm local time
Venue: McDonald Jones Stadium
Head to head odds: Roosters $3.25, Melbourne $1.35
Line: Roosters (+10.5 points) $1.85, Melbourne (-10.5 points) $1.95
Match total: 48.5 points: over $1.85, under $1.95
Our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for Thursday’s game.
Wet weather is forecast all week in Newcastle so this could be quite the slog. Although the Storm have won the past three games against the Roosters none has been a real blowout. That should not change this time.
The Roosters No.1 was outstanding for the Blues on Sunday night and reminded fans that he is probably still the No.1 player in rugby league. He was dynamic and will be crucial again. His fitness is second to none and we expect him to continue on in this rich vein of form.
It’s impossible to tip against the team that has won 12 games in a row and the scary thing is, they still have stars such as Grant and fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen to return. There seems little doubt the Storm will be around the mark when the premiership rings are being decided this season. The Roosters could go either way but they are putting out their best time in some time and we thin they can really give their fierce southern rivals a shake in this one. Our Roosters v Storm prediction: Storm to win by 2 points.
Nine, Fox League and KAYO will telecast the game.
