Manly v Canberra Raiders round 17

Welcome to our Manly-Canberra Raiders preview, prediction and odds update for their 4 Pines Park, Manly, clash on Thursday night, July 8.

Bookies have the Sea Eagles as short-priced favourites to win this match at home, and rightly so. Not only is Des Hasler’s team in cracking form, their opponents the Raiders could hardly be travelling worse.

Last weekend was a new low for Ricky Stuart’s Green Machine as they were embarrassed by the similarly flaky Gold Coast Titans.

We keep waiting for the Raiders, unlucky runners-up in the grand final less than two years ago, to show some signs of life but they keep disappointing and it’s pretty much season over if they can’t cause a huge upset in this game.

It won’t be easy. Manly have won six of the past seven games between these teams though only once has there been a margin greater than eight points in that time.

In their most recent clash the Sea Eagles won 14-6 at Campbelltown in round six, 2020.

Sea Eagles v Raiders team news for round 17

The Sea Eagles will be without their two biggest stars in fullback ”Turbo Tom” Trbojevic and halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.

Reuben Garrick moves back to fullback from the wing, with Moses Suli taking Garrick’s wing position. Veteran Dylan Walker takes over the No.7 jersey from Cherry-Evans, with promising youngster Cade Cust coming on to the bench.

Forward Jack Gosiewski (foot) is another Sea Eagle close to making a return and was named among the reserves.

Meanwhile, Canberra also lose two high-quality players to Origin in prop Josh Papalii and five-eighth Jack Wighton. They have also lost fullback Bailey Simonsson to a toe injury and forward Elliott Whitehead (shoulder, facial cut).

Matt Frawley gets his chance in the No.6 jersey, while Cairns-born flyer Xavier Savage is the new No.1, with Emre Guler the new starting prop and veteran Ryan James on the pine along with recalled forward Hudson Young.

Sea Eagles v Raiders free betting tips

Our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for Thursday evening’s game.

Sea Eagles -16.5 points/match total over 46.5 points

We normally shy away from backing teams to cover big margins as they often ease up once a match is done and dusted. But clear weather is forecast for this one and the Raiders were so bad last week we don’t know how they can turn it around so quickly at Brookvale. The Sea Eagles have been scoring points with great ease of late, with 50, 60 and 66 in their past three games.

Jason Saab to score 3+ tries at $7

This is also putting a lot of faith in the Sea Eagles racking up a big score but Saab has emerged as a dazzling finisher and is arguably the new quickest man in the game. He has scored 16 tries in 15 games this season and is only three off the equal leading try-scorers in the NRL this season in Josh Addo-Carr and Alex Johnston.

Sea Eagles v Raiders prediction 8-7-2021

We’d like to think Ricky Stuart can read the Raiders the riot act and they will respond with a win for the ages to breathe life into their season. But honestly they looked dispirited and beaten-down last weekend and now they face one of the hottest teams in the competition. It helps that Tom Trbojevic is on Origin duty, but the Sea Eagles have really unearther some exciting talent of late and they should thrive again on their home turf, now renamed 4 Pines Park. Our Sea Eagles-Raiders prediction: Sea Eagles by 24 points.
