Gambling on Prince Edward Island

Gambling on Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province by land mass, has a population of fewer than 150,000 residents but it does have several venues where you can gamble.

It is also a member of the Trans Atlantic Lottery Corporation, meaning draw games are perfectly legal for real money and are licensed.

The province has two racing tracks which also host slot machines and table games and several bingo venues.

In terms of wagering online there is nothing stopping residents of PEI from betting on sports and playing at online casinos hosted offshore.

Sports betting on Prince Edward Island

The only regulated sports betting on Prince Edward Island is run by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation and is restrictive, with bet types being Pro-Line, Pro-Line Futures, Pro-Line Fantasy and Stadium Bets.

These types of wagers can be placed both online and offline, but in comparison to the offerings of offshore sports betting operations, they are not the best.

Under the Pro-Lines system there are designated cards which handicap key North American sports such as NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA, while football, golf and tennis also make appearances.

These types of bets can be made at various lottery retail outlets, but there is no bricks-and-mortar betting shops in Canada.

Online sports betting

PEI residents are free to gamble at offshore, online gambling websites and no one has ever been charged for doing so. In fact online sports betting is not properly addressed in Canadian law.

There is one Canadian online sportsbook that is licensed, SportsInteraction.com. This website is easily the best local option, but you still cannot bet on head-to-head sporting results.

Some of the best offshore sportsbooks available to Canada include William Hill and BetOnline.

Lottery on Prince Edward Island

Despite its small population PEI has some great legal lotteries available to people living there. Of course, they are part of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.

This means there are weekly draws worth millions and daily draws worth thousands taking place across Canada every day.

Via the ALC website you can also play other real money games. These are classified as “skill games” including some bingo and keno variations.

PEI harness racing

Red Shores is the sole racing club, of any code, on Prince Edward Island with the casino and sports club hosting harness racing events there.

Racing fans from around the world might be familiar with the picturesque Red Shores as action from this track is often streamed around the world.

Harness racing events are held on Sundays at Summerside, while the bigger Charlottetown track hosts meetings on Thursdays and Saturdays during the season.

Prince Edward Island online casinos

The only regulated online games available on Prince Edward Island are via the Atlantic Lottery Corporation website, including games such as bingo and keno variations.

Again, to play at fully-fledged online casinos you will need to play at one licensed elsewhere, although there is always conjecture about the legality of casinos licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.

At online casinos you will be able to play all of the games you are accustomed to at land-based venues. These include popular titles such as slots, poker, blackjack, roulette and baccarat.

Because online offshore casinos are not really addressed in Canadian or PEI law, you are not in any danger of being charged.

Professional sports teams on PEI

Prince Edward Island does not have any big-league professional sports teams, largely because of its small population. The biggest sporting team also has one of the great names we have heard: the Prince Edward Island Senators play in the American Hockey League, which is a minor pro league.

Famous sportspeople from PEI include Bob MacMillan, who played professional ice hockey for 11 seasons in the NHL for the New York Rangers in the 1980s. He is also the father of Logan Macmillan who was a first-round draft pick for the Anaheim Ducks in 2008.

Land-based venues on Prince Edward Island

While Prince Edward Island has a smaller population than other Canadian provinces, it still boasts several venues where citizens or visitors can gamble.

The biggest venue on PEI is the Red Shores Casino and Racetrack, which on top of its regular harness racing meetings, also has table games, slots and simulcasting.

Other venues incorporating gambling on the island include bingo halls and a second Red Shores venue, which is located at Summerside.
