South Africa v England 1st ODI tips, odds update, Cape Town

South Africa v England T20, November 29

This is WGL’s odds update and tips for the first of three one-day internationals at Newlands, Cape Town, on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.
England step out in 50-over cricket for the first time since winning the ICC World Cup on home soil last year. They are also fresh off an emphatic 3-1 Test series win over South Africa and are rated hot favourites to continue the streak in this three-match series, before they also play three T20 Internationals.
England will field something of a new-look side, as will the struggling South Africa who are attempting to rebound from a disastrous World Cup and of course the Test series reversal at home.

England and South Africa team changes

The tourists have lost paceman Jofra Archer (elbow) for the rest of the series, while he is also in some doubt for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, superstar all-rounder Ben Stokes, hard-hitting Jos Buttler and paceman Mark Wood have been rested for the one-dayers but expected to play the Twenty20 matches.
With those players on the sideline England will test out the likes of powerful wicketkeeper batsman Tom Banton, who was exciting for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash tournament in Australia. He is a likely inclusion for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
Leg-spinner Matt Parkinson will also get a chance in the ODIs after being part of the touring party for the Test series in New Zealand and South Africa.
Meanwhile, South Africa have brought in new blood as they have rested captain Faf du Plessis and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, with Quinton de Kock, a standout for the Proteas in the Test series, to lead the side for the first time.
Batsmen Janneman Malan and JJ Smuts will get their chance, along with wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, all-rounder Bjorn Fortuin and pace bowler Lutho Sipamla.
“The guys that have come in must learn as quickly as possible. We are here to win, not to just see how things go,” experienced batsman David Miller told Reuters.
“We are playing the world champions, but everybody is beatable. If we come with the right mindset it will be a really good series.”

South Africa v England 1st ODI betting tips

Here are the WGL’s selections for the South Africa v Englland one-dayer on Tuesday, February 4. For more information about betting on international cricket fixtures follow the link.

Tom Curran man of the match at $21

Curran was in outstanding form in the Big Bash League in Australia before heading off to join the touring party in South Africa. He was born in Cape Town but it is happy knack of breaking partnerships and getting quick runs which puts him in the frame here for us at a big price. A really exciting prospect along with younger brother Tom.

Quinton de Kock top scorer for South Africa at $3

A class act and was the only batsmen to repeatedly cause headaches for the England bowlers in the Test series. We think he will relish the extra responsibility of being captain.

England to win at $1.57

We normally shy away from such short odds but England’s squad just looks a cut above for this match. South Africa will really need some special individual performances to have any sort of chance.

South Africa v England predictions – 1st ODI, Feb 4, 2020

Newlands is a fortress for the Proteas in one-day cricket; they have won 15 of their past 18 matches at the ground. But this is a side in transition and, Quinton de Kock aside, they are going in with an inexperienced and unproven batting line-up. We think England will win courtesy of a strong, experienced batting line-up.
