Durban July winning jockey under investigation in South Africa
The National Horseracing Authority of South Africa has imposed interim suspensions on two licensed jockeys, S’manga Khumalo and Luyolo Mxothwa, as part of an ongoing integrity investigation into alleged misconduct linked to betting and race activity.
Both riders have been stood down with immediate effect under Rule 91.2, with the NHA stating their continued participation posed “an unacceptable risk” to the integrity of the sport. The suspensions will remain in place pending a formal Inquiry scheduled for April 7–8, 2026.
According to the Authority, the allegations against both jockeys include communications and financial dealings tied to race activity, exchange betting, and conduct potentially inconsistent with the obligations of licensed riders. The matters may constitute breaches relating to corrupt practices, prohibited betting, and actions impacting race outcomes.
The NHA has not confirmed whether the cases are directly linked, but the identical nature and timing of the suspensions suggests a broader investigation.
Both jockeys will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations at the upcoming Inquiry. Khumalo shot to prominence in South African racing in 2013, when he became the first black jockey to win the Durban July, one of the top races in the country.
