Dragons coaching contenders emerge after Flanagan sacking
Dean Young and Michael Ennis have emerged as the leading contenders to replace Shane Flanagan after his removal by “mutual agreement” as head coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons was confirmed on Monday.
Australian betting sites are yet to launch a market on who will replace Flanagan, but contenders include the Dragons’ assistant coaches, along with Ben Hornby and Brad Arthur.
Dragons Chairman Andrew Lancaster said the club would formalise their interim coaching structure in the coming hours, with a meeting set down for later Monday.
“I think whoever takes control of this club needs to know there is a significant amount of pressure and expectation, and rightly so,” he said.
“Our job is to get to the right solution and make sure have the right person and people making the right decisions for the right reasons… we expect success.”
Flanagan’s exit follows a disastrous start to the 2026 NRL season, with the Dragons losing their opening seven matches and extending a losing streak that stretches back to last year. The club’s form collapse ultimately proved decisive after a weekend meeting with senior officials.
The numbers underline the scale of the decline. Flanagan won just 19 of his 55 games in charge, a strike rate of roughly 34 per cent, with the Dragons sitting winless through seven rounds this season.
Saturday’s 30-12 defeat to the South Sydney Rabbitohs was the latest blow, following heavy losses to the Manly Sea Eagles and North Queensland Cowboys in recent weeks.
Flanagan, who took over in 2024 and previously guided the Cronulla Sharks to a historic premiership, had been under mounting pressure as the club struggled with recruitment issues, player departures and inconsistent performances.
An interim coaching appointment is expected ahead of the Dragons’ Anzac Day clash with the Sydney Roosters, as the club looks to spark an immediate turnaround and salvage its season.
