NRL round 7: Cowboys v Titans

NRL Round 5, 2022, starts on Thursday, April 7, with the Knights-Sea Eagles clash at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle. We take an early look at a big week ahead in the NRL.

The Knights are surprisingly favourites to win at home against a team many think can challenge this season, but a lot of that can be put down to a mini injury crisis at the Manly side.

Not only will the Sea Eagles be without superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic (knee), but tough centre Brad Parker (Covid-19) and utility Dylan Walker (knee) are also in doubt.

All the early money has been for the Knights, who clearly are a much more difficult side to get past on their home soil, even coming off a disappointing 18-0 loss to the Sharks last Friday night.

There are several seeming mismatches in round five of the NRL, and we see the match of the round as the clash on Saturday night between Gold Coast and Parramatta at CBUS Super Stadium.

The Eels have made a rock-solid start to the season with threes win and a loss, but need to keep it going against a Titans side that has finals ambitions of its own. We see the Eels as a team in the 3rd-6th range by the end of the regular season, with our league experts rating the Titans from 6th-12th, so this match is an important early season test for both clubs.

Elsewhere, Brisbane’s bright start to the season seems an eternity ago already, and now they have lost five-eighth Albert Kelly and workhorse forward  Pat Carrigan (knee) to injury.

They face the Roosters at home on Friday night, with bookies rating them around $3.70 against the Roosters at $1.29. It’s hard to make a case for the Broncos, and it’s already time for coach Kevin Walters to circle the wagons and encourage a reaction from his side or risk slipping away into oblivion once again.

NRL Premiership odds before Round 5, 2022

Penrith go from strength to strength to start this season, and that is reflected in the NRL title betting at leading Australian bookmaker TopSport.

The Panthers were in from $4 to $3.70 to win the title, after the seamless return of Nathan Cleary in their impressive victory against a tough Souths side last Friday night.

The Storm, though, are nipping their heels, with the Melbourne side at $4.60, as they continued to impress with a win against the hapless Dragons.

Manly surprisingly shortened from $12 to $10 despite the disastrous news they will be without key attacking weapon Tom Trbojevic for at least a month, after the fullback had minor knee surgery this week. He is close to irreplaceable, though his absence may force the Sea Eagles to vary their attack a little more.

Cronulla are another side on the rise; after starting the season around $20 under new coach Craig Fitzgibbon, the Sharks are now in to $12 and have shaped as arguably the biggest improvers from 2021, in the early part of the season at least.

Souths have endured a tough start to the year and are out to $13, while the Knights and Raiders both moved from $23 to $34 after the weekend’s matches and they look as though they will struggle to stay in touch with the top half-dozen teams.
