Australian racing tips

The main action in Australian this weekend is at Eagle Farm on Saturday for the running of the Group 1 Queensland Oaks meeting, with a decent if not outstanding support card of several listed races.

Elsewhere there is back-type racing at Randwick and Belmont Park in Western Australia, but for this article we will focus on the next meeting in a fascinating Queensland carnival which has its biggest events yet to come.

Group 1 Australasian Oaks winner Panova is the favourite for the Queensland Oaks, having had 42 days since her big win at Morphettville, and trainer Chris Waller is sure to have her primed to produce her best in a race won by the mighty Winx 11 years ago. In fact, the oaks was the first race in Winx’s epic 33-race winning streak to finish her career.

In recent years this has been a race for roughies with $101 chance Socks Nation winning in 2024 and $21 chance You Wahng last year. A dry week in Brisbane has the Eagle Farm track on the cusp of getting back to good, so you might see some sharp form reversals from races on sodden tracks in Brisbane and elsewhere in recent weeks.

Other metro Australian racing includes meetings from a wet Flemington, Randwick, Morphettville and Belmont. Read on for our free betting tips and analysis for the best racing in Australia on June 6.

Eagle Farm Race 7

Listed Sky Racing Spear Chief Hcp (1500m)

(12) King Zephyr is building an impressive recored with six wins and five placings from only 13 starts and most recently just missed at Sandown over 1400m. The 1500m looks ideal. He is drawn wide but will get back and be storming home for Craig Williams. Fellow Melbourne-trained galloper (5) Harry’s Yacht is ultra consistent and drawn the pole, though by that stage of the day the fence may not be the place to be. (2) Kronenbourg races well at this track and is one of two runners from the leading local yard of Tony Gollan. He looks over the odds at $17 after his recent good form which included a shock win at $91 in a listed race on Anzac Day. Outside the favourite there’s value to be found, with at least half a dozen strong chances.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 12,2,5,14. Best bet: King Zephyr to win.

Eagle Farm Race 8

Group 1 Seven Queensland Oaks(2200m)

(1) Panova was impressive winning the Australasian Oaks in South Australia, and she has been well backed to add another Oaks here. If you give her a chance you can’t rule out (4) Paltrow Miss, which ran third to Panova last start and at only her fifth start here has so much upside. Alas Paltrow Miss is drawn off the track and will need a great steer from Craig Williams as she is likely to press forward. (3) Fireball Miss won the main lead-up race to this a fortnight ago but has been easy in betting, while Kiwi filly (2) Single Red should be in this for a long way at big odds. (8) Chispa ran well for second to Fireball Miss and will be primed to peak for this. It’s a tough race to line up and the drying track throws up the prospect of one of the lightly raced types going to a new level back on better footing.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 8,3,1,5. Best bet: Chispa from the Waller stable each-way.

Eagle Farm Race 9

Group 2 Ladbrokes Moreton Cup (1200m)

A fascinating sprint to finish the day. These are mostly the second-stringers and rising types trying to win a start in the Stradbroke Handicap and it’s a brutal race in which to try to find a winner. (10) King Of Sparta is arguably the best horse in the race and will be fitter for his first-up run after an injury enforced 18-month lay-off. He is a quality galloper with more than $3 million in prizemoney and if he returns to his best he would win this, though (11) Uncommon James is another galloper whose best is outstanding. There has been some backing for both in the lead-up to the race. Class mate (2) Manaal is the early favourite but you should be able to score around $6 about her on race day. (6) In Flight is from the Joe Pride stable, which has had a fair amount of joy at this carnival over the years.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 6,10,2,3 Best bet: Craig Williams again on In Flight.
