BetMGM clamping down on customers who harass athletes

BetMGM is updating its terms of service to explicitly prohibit harassment of athletes, coaches and team or league personnel, with confirmed breaches resulting in customer account suspensions.

The operator said the revised language provides greater clarity around conduct expectations, reinforcing existing powers to suspend accounts for harassment while underscoring its stance on sports integrity and player safety.

BetMGM chief compliance officer Rhea Loney said the regulated environment enables the operator to identify misconduct, investigate reports and act decisively when harassment is confirmed.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to sports integrity — and that commitment extends to safeguarding athletes, coaches and league personnel,” she said.

“Our legal, regulated environment enables us to identify misconduct, investigate reports, and take action when necessary. Any confirmed instance of harassment will result in decisive measures, including account suspension.”

BetMGM ambassador and Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders said it was important to protect athletes, who are often put into high-profile positions, with very little experience.

“As a professional athlete, I know how important respect is — both on and off the field,” he said.

“BetMGM is sending a strong message that harassment has no place in sports or sports betting. I’m proud to see BetMGM protecting athletes and promoting integrity.”

The move aligns with BetMGM’s broader responsible gambling strategy, including educational messaging delivered through GameSense, developed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation and licensed to MGM Resorts International and BetMGM.

BetMGM operates in 30 markets, including the United Kingdom and Ontario (BetMGM.ca review), while they also have mobile and retail offerings across the United States.
