NZ Racing appoints new chair, replacing Russell Warwick
The New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) Board has appointed Paul Humphries as Chair from August 1 through to the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting in November, succeeding Russell Warwick, who steps down from the role at the end of July.
Mr Humphries brings extensive racing, governance and commercial experience to the position, along with a lifelong connection to the thoroughbred industry.
Raised in a racing family with Awapuni Racecourse as his backyard, Paul has been involved in the industry as an owner, breeder, sponsor and administrator. His governance experience includes serving as Chair of RACE Incorporated, President of the Manawatu Racing Club and Chair of the Members’ Council.
NZTR Chief Executive Matt Ballesty welcomed Paul’s appointment.
“Paul has a deep understanding of New Zealand racing, from its participants and clubs through to governance at a national level,” he said.
“He also brings considerable commercial and leadership experience. These qualities will be valuable as NZTR continues its programme of reform and investment across the industry.
“We look forward to working with Paul as we build on the momentum already established and continue strengthening the future of thoroughbred racing in New Zealand.”
Members’ Council Chair Bernard Hickey also congratulated Mr Humphries on his appointment.
“We congratulate Paul and look forward to working collaboratively with him and the Board to support the best outcomes for thoroughbred racing at this pivotal time,” Mr Hickey said.
Mr Humphries said it was a privilege to take on the role.
“Racing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I am honoured to have the opportunity to serve the industry as Chair of NZTR,” he said.
“This is an important time for New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing. There is significant work underway, including Project Stamina, and my immediate focus will be on working with the Board, management and industry stakeholders to maintain that momentum.
“I understand the challenges our industry faces, but I am also confident about the opportunities ahead. We have passionate people throughout racing and a shared interest in creating a strong and sustainable future for the industry.”
Outside racing, Paul is the founder and Managing Director of Humphries Construction and has more than 25 years’ experience building and leading businesses across the construction, property development and investment sectors.
Mr Ballesty also acknowledged outgoing Chair Russell Warwick for his leadership during a significant period of change for the industry.
“Russell has led NZTR through a significant period of change. We thank him for his leadership and are pleased the Board will continue to benefit from his experience as a director through to the Annual General Meeting in November.”
Mr Humphries will serve as Chair through to the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting in November. In accordance with NZTR’s constitution, the Board formed following the AGM will then appoint its Chair for the year ahead.
