Australian racing tips for August 15, 2026
Spring is in the air in Australian racing, with a Caulfield card packed full of talented three-year-olds returning to action for the Group 3 Vain Stakes for the boys and Quezette Stakes for the fillies.
These races are always a great form reference for what is to come later in the year as the Melbourne spring carnival arrives. But even they are not the highlight of the day at Caulfield, with the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes taking pride of place.
It has attracted a smart field of sprinters, including the boom former West Australian Cosmic Crusader, which did the right thing for our supporters when it bolted in three weeks ago on its Melbourne debut. This is a sterner test for Cosmic Crusader but with nine wins from only 18 starts the gelding is certainly headed in the right direction. We will soon know whether he will measure up in Group 1 company.
It’s not only in Melbourne that many of the good two-year-olds are back in action and headed for big prizes in the spring. The Rosebud in Sydney over 1100m is the first of the lead-up races to the Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400m at Rosehill in late September.
Heading the field for the Listed Rosebud is the exciting filly Blue Door, though there is no shortage of contenders which have had a couple of starts in their juvenile season, then a spell and will return for this as much more seasoned racehorses.
Elsewhere in Australian racing there are metropolitan meetings at Doomben, Morphettville and Belmont.

Caulfield Race 5
Group 3 Tobin Brothers Vain Stakes (1100m)
(2) Closer To Free is the hot favourite and should sit out side the speed from a wide gate or even power to the front. The Street Boss colt looks a top-class sprinter, but there are others in this that could really test him, particularly if there is pace on up front. (1) Tornado Valley was tested out in top company as a juvenile and did reasonably well. He is drawn ideally and if the gaps open up will be steaming home late. (3) Hard Kick is talented and should not be dismissed on the back of one failure. (7) Confederation is a maiden colt from the Waller stable which looks all upside, while (8) Organised Crime is a silly price for a galloper with such obvious potential but which is being thrown in at the deep end..

Caulfield Race 6
Group 3 Quayclean Quezette Stakes (1100m)
(15) Santa Barbara is a Snitzel filly which stormed home along the fence at Flemington to just miss on debut and she should be even better suited in this style of race. She will likely have to go back from the wide draw but should again by strong late. (1) Lara Antipova is a top-class Kiwi filly which is unbeaten in four starts and has already collected a Group 1 victory. She gives away weight to all rivals but she may be being underestimated by bagmen at around $6. The favourite (5) Natural Fling will likely race on the speed, though there looks to be a handful of speedy types which could set it up for a backmarker..
Rupert McIntosh tips: 1,15,5,12. Best bet: Very tough race but the Kiwi is proven. Lara Antipova each-way.
Caulfield Race 7
Group 2 Catanach’s Jewellers P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m)
This is a moment of truth for (7) Cosmic Crusader, and trainer Andrea Leek has even recruited the Wizard of the West William Pike to ride the talented gelding. If he can measure up to the likes of the evergreen (1) Private Eye and (2) Evaporate, his next stop will be in Group 1 company. Both those rivals are drawn wide. Watch for (13) Ohope Wins to be storming home late. She is an Oaks winner and has drawn the fence.
Rupert McIntosh tips: 7,1,13,2. Best bet: Stick with Cosmic Crusader.
Caulfield Race 8
Listed Evergreen Turf Regal Roller Stakes (1200m)
It has not taken long for comeback jockey Blake Shinn to get among the winners and he partners the early favourite (7) Recommendation here. The gelding is well suited at this track and distance and Shinn is just the man to get him to settle back in the field and come with a late burst. He will be spotting the speedy mare (9) Shadhavar a start, and she will be tough to get past for ace jockey Craig Williams. (4) Ndola ran home well for fourth last start and third-up he should be at his peak, and is drawn the pole. (1) Arkansaw Kid is consistent around this level, and beware the former Kiwi galloper (11) Asakura in the hands of William Pike.
Rupert McIntosh tips: 4,11,7,1. Best bet: Ndola to charge home along the fence.
Rosehill Race 8
Listed TAB Rosebud (1100m)
(3) Central Europe seems a perfect example of a three-year-old which will have benefited enormously from a couple of runs as a two-year-old before a spell. He is in the hands of the master Chris Waller and his first two runs were outstanding, including a second on debut when beaten only a nose by Campione D’italia, which went on to win the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce. Central Europe may not be fully wound up and the risk is that he finds the likes of (6) Blue Door simply too speedy over the 1100m, but he should be powering through the line. Blue Door and (7) Chilly Girl are likely to contest the lead, and if they overdo it or another runner drawn wider also turns on the early speed, the race could be set up for Central Europe or the likes of (10) Castillo King, which has been well backed, to finish over the top. (5) Under Focus is well into double-figure odds but looks ready to go, though the wide barrier may be a problem..
Rupert McIntosh tips: 3,6,5,10. Best bet: Central Europe to win. He looks all class.
