South Africa stun Australia to clinch Test series
South Africa have claimed a stunning 2-1 Test series victory over Australia, with off-spinner Simon Harmer destroying the tourists’ batting lineup in a 176-run victory in Cape Town.
The Proteas, who entered the three-Test series as slight outsiders with bookmakers, also reclaimed the No.1 position in the ICC Test rankings following their comprehensive victory at Newlands.
Australian captain Pat Cummins was left lamenting another disastrous batting collapse, with his side bowled out for just 111 chasing 288 for victory on the final day.
“A few really poor decisions. I know it’s a day-five wicket, but I don’t think it was drastic,” Cummins told reporters.
“There was runs to be scored out there. There was lots of balls to face – a few decisions that the boys would like back.
“(Our) start in the first couple overs where you’re behind it – maybe you’re chasing a little bit harder than maybe when you turn up and think ‘this is how you think the day is going to go’.
“So we’ve got to get better. It’s happened a few times … we thought that chase was very achievable.”
Australia will now turn their attention to a four-Test series against New Zealand, beginning on December 9, with subsequent matches scheduled for December 17, December 26 and January 4, 2027.
South Africa, meanwhile, will host Bangladesh in a two-Test series beginning November 15, before welcoming England for a three-Test series starting December 17.
The Proteas’ victory represented another significant result for punters who backed the reigning World Test Champions before the series.
Australia had been installed as marginal favourites at approximately 2 with international betting sites, while South Africa were available at 2.10 despite enjoying home-ground advantage.
World Gambling List’s opening Test preview highlighted Australia’s fragile batting lineup and tipped South Africa to exploit the tourists’ vulnerabilities, and while the first Test went the Aussies way, these concerns ultimately proved decisive, with Australia suffering consecutive batting collapses in Gqeberha and Cape Town after putting themselves in competitive positions.
The tourists were dismissed for just 99 in their second innings in Gqeberha, suffering an innings defeat that levelled the series before another capitulation in the decider.
Harmer was the architect of Australia’s latest humiliation, claiming remarkable figures of 6-16 from 21.1 overs as the visitors lost six wickets for just 42 runs before lunch.
The 37-year-old finished with match figures of 10-120, outperforming Australian counterpart Nathan Lyon and delivering one of the defining performances of the series.
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was equally destructive with the new ball, claiming 3-39 and removing key Australian batsmen before Harmer dismantled the middle and lower order.
Cameron Green offered some resistance with 27 from 110 deliveries, while Lyon top-scored with an unbeaten 33 as Australia desperately attempted to salvage a draw.
The defeat leaves Australia with four losses from their past seven Tests and marks the first time in three-and-a-half years they have suffered consecutive defeats in the format.
For South Africa, the series triumph further strengthens their standing as the world’s leading Test side, having also defeated Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s.
Towering all-rounder Marco Jansen was named player of the series, but it was Harmer’s extraordinary final-day performance that sealed a memorable victory for the Proteas.
