Carlton v Richmond betting tips for AFL round 1 2022

Welcome to our Carlton v Richmond tips, prediction and odds analysis for their AFL round 1 clash at the MCG on Thursday night.

The Blues will be playing their first game under new coach Michael Voss, while the ageing Tigers will be looking to respond after slumping to 12th on the ladder last season.

Damien Hardwick’s team has been priced at $1.48 to win this clash, while the Blues are outsiders at $2.61 with leading Australian bookmaker Sportsbet. The $1.90 line has been set at 12.5 points.

Complicating this fixture is a delayed start to the season for Carlton’s no.1 man Sam Walsh, who is still overcoming an ankle injury. They will also have Liam Stocker, Caleb Marchbank, David Cunningham and Josh Honey unavailable.

Richmond, the dominant team in modern AFL history, has a point to prove after its disappointing performance in 2021, with Dylan Grimes and Toby Nankervis appointed dual captains after Trent Cotchin stood down.

The Tigers were whacked hard by injuries to key players last year, including star utility Dustin Martin, who missed a large chunk of football because of a serious kidney injury. Dion Prestia and Nick Vlastuin also missed plenty of games and have again suffered interrupted preseasons and are in doubt for this fixture.

They are likely to unveil key defender Robbie Tarrant, who crosses from the Roos, and Josh Gibcus in what will be a new-look back six.

Blues v Tigers tips

Our AFL betting expert has examined the odds and found some value Carlton v Richmond tips:

Dustin Martin to get 25 possessions

All the mail has indicated Richmond star Dustin Martin is likely to play more midfield minutes this season, with the Tigers attempting to patch up this area of the ground, after being below par in many matches. Martin, who is coming back from injury, has reportedly lost weight and is super fit. At his best, he’s prolific and he is paying a tempting $1.83 to reach 25 touches, which is well worth a look.

Patrick Cripps to reach 30 possessions

Cripps is fit again and is likely to be the linchpin through the midfield with young gun Walsh absent. While Cripps was a serious multi killer last year, as his body failed him, we’re willing to give him another shot now he’s healed and ready to go. Cripps is paying $2.50 to reach 30 possessions and looks to be great value.

Shai Bolton to kick three goals

Bolton has emerged as a real star of the AFL in recent seasons and while he is likely to spend time through the midfield, we think he will play predominantly forward, given Martin is expected to play on ball. Bolton, the spring-heeled flyer, is also paying a very lucrative $9 to kick three goals or more with Topsport, which we think is a strong roughie in this contest.

Carlton v Richmond prediction 17/3

It should be a fantastic clash at the MCG and we’re particularly looking forward to the battle of the spearheads, with Carlton star Harry McKay and Richmond gun Tom Lynch both in the market for the Coleman Medal. Carlton certainly has strong claims in this contest and we probably would take them if Walsh was fit, because we suspect the Tigers are out of flag contention. They will also be playing under their new coach for the first time and if the preseason is any indication, they will have a harder edge. But in the end, the Tigers’ experience in big matches has them just getting the nod. Our final Carlton v Richmond prediction? Tigers by 11 points.
