Gold Coast v Richmond tips, prediction and odds - AFL rd 16 preview

Welcome to our Gold Coast v Richmond betting tips, predictions and odds analysis for their AFL round 16 clash at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.

The Suns are at long odds to cause an upset and drifted even further in the betting when the match was switched from the Gold Coast to Melbourne, because of Queensland’s Covid-19 restrictions.

This has seen them balloon out from $5.20 to $5.87 with TopSport, while Richmond has shortened from $1.22 into $1.10. The $1.90  line has been set at 34.5 points and is going to attract some attention from punters.

The Tigers are coming off a disastrous showing against St Kilda which they lost by 40 points. But the toll is even greater for the reigning premier with Noah Balta and Nathan Broad both suffering serious injuries, which will see them racing to be fit for a potential finals campaign. Kane Lambert (calf) and Dion Prestia (hamstring) were also ruled out of this encounter against the Suns.

On the positive side the Tigers regain star full-forward Tom Lynch after a month out with a knee injury and that could not be more timely considered they managed just two goals for the match against the Saints.

Gold Coast has slumped to 16th on the AFL ladder and were lucky not to have lost to the Roos by much more than nine points last outing. They are likely to be boosted by stand-in skipper David Swallow (concussion) and Sam Collins (ankle) for this clash.

Gold Coast v Richmond tips

Our AFL betting expert has assessed the markets and found some value Gold Coast v Richmond tips:

Richmond to win 1-39

The Tigers are struggling and it’s hard seeing them blowing the Gold Coast away, when they have so much to play for. The Tigers are paying $2.20 in 1-39 margin betting, which looks good value given their outs and the fact that Suns coach Stuart Dew is probably fighting for his career.

Dustin Martin to kick 2+ goals

Martin did his best to kick start the Tigers last round, but even the Brownlow Medal winner could not spark them. While he has not been as good as in other years, he should get plenty of time forward, where his team needs a spark. Keep an eye on selection, with Lynch’s return looming large but a couple of goals for Dusty at $2.20 is a good bet on this game.

Over/Under betting

Gold Coast has lost six games in a row against the Tigers and have dropped six of their last seven this season, with scoring their major issue. They have averaged just 59.7 points in their past seven games. With the over/under mark set at 164.5 by Unibet, we just can’t see these two out-of-form teams scoring enough to challenge it. Take the unders with confidence.

Gold Coast Suns v Richmond Tigers prediction

We went all in on Richmond last round and could not be any more disappointed with the outcome. To put it simply they were putrid, but they did get hit with the injury stick. The Tigers lose this game and we will put a line through them this year. Gold Coast needs to show something this week, or the jungle drums will begin to beat that little bit louder about Dew’s position. Our final Richmond v Gold Coast prediction? Tigers by 29 points.
