NRL round 16 schedule, 2021 title odds update

The Wests-Souths battle is an important one, particularly for Wayne Bennett’s Rabbitohs, who can move into third place on the NRL table with a win and stay hot on the heels of the cracking pace being set by Melbourne Storm and Penrith.

A Bunnies win also just about locks up a top-four position, with the Storm, Panthers, Rabbitohs and Eels seemingly having a mortgage on those all-important places for the finals.

Souths have won five of their past six matches against the Wests Tigers, but it was an epic battle when they met in round six this season, with the Bunnies prevailing 18-14.

They also played two tight contests last season, with the Rabbitohs winning 26-24 in round 18 and 18-10 in round nine.

Wests Tigers are coming into this off two disappointing displays in which they were thrashed by Parramatta (40-12) and Melbourne Storm (66-16). They need to get their defence working.

Wests Tigers v Rabbitohs team news for round 16

Wests Tigers welcome back rising star Adam Doueihi at centre after he missed last week with a head knock), replacing Tommy Talau. Young Kiwi prop Thomas Mikaele comes on to the bench in place of another young front-rower in Tom Amone.

Souths, meanwhile, regain veteran strike player Benji Marshall on the bench after he took a break for the birth of his child. He replaces Blake Taaffe, who drops out of the 17.

All the Rabbitohs’ State of Origin stars, Latrell Mitchell, Dane Gagai, Damien Cook, Jai Arrow and Cameron Murray, have been named to take their places.

Our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for Sunday evening’s game.

Wests Tigers +20.5 points/match total under 52.5 points

The rot needs to stop here for the Tigers and coach Michael Maguire should have driven home the point all week that the defence needs to be so much better. The Wests Tigers have plenty of ability but just need to find better application.

Alex Johnston to score 2+ tries

The Souths winger is a try-scoring master and even though he is short at $2.56 with TopSport to score two or more tries, we think we will hit the mark. Souths run so much of their deadly attack to his side of the field that it’s no surprise he is once again among the top try scorers in the NRL this season.

Wests Tigers v South Sydney Rabbitohs prediction 4-7-2021

We love to see games at suburban grounds such as this one, although it will be weird without the crowd on the hill as this is played behind closed doors thanks to Sydney’s COVID-19 outbreak. Wests Tigers will no doubt offer up an improved performance but the Rabbitohs simply look a little too good for them. The Bunnies also have a lot at stake as this is their chance to stay right in the hunt for a top-two spot. They should get the job done without too many issues. Our Tigers-South prediction: South Sydney to win by 12 points.
