The Ashes 2019 - England vs Australia fifth Test predictions and odds

Australia and Pakistan head to Adelaide for the second and final Test, a day-night affair starting on Friday, November 29.
The host team seems unlikely to make any changes after its resounding innings victory in the first Test in Brisbane, although paceman James Pattinson is available again. Pakistan copped heat for leaving out proven seamer Mohammad Abbas and he seems likely to come into the line-up.

Abbas, 29, has the superb stats of 66 wickets at 18.86 in 14 Tests and will prove a handful, especially in the night sessions in Adelaide with the pink ball.
Adelaide was once considered a batsman’s paradise but the advent of drop-in pitches there and night sessions has evened the ledger to the extent the Australian pace attack is salivating at the thought of being let loose there.
Bookmakers have posted Australia as red-hot $1.20 favourites to win the match, and that is no surprise given their dominance in the first Test. They had Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner and Joe Burns all in imperious form, while their attack rates as arguably the best in the world at the moment.
There is some rain forecast for the weekend but given the more difficult batting conditions of the day-night Test, the draw seems an unlikely outcome. Nonetheless it is prudent to check the weather forecast a little closer to the match.

Cricket betting sites have already posted plenty of markets for the Test in Adelaide and we have sorted through them to try to find a value option heading into the match.

Australia v Pakistan 2nd Test odds

Australia v Pakistan head to head odds: Australia $1.20, Pakistan $8.00.
Draw odds: $9

Our thoughts on Australia v Pakistan odds: We see this as a match in which there won’t be a draw, but there are still question marks over the strength of the Australian batting, particularly if the ball swings. All things being equal Australia will win at home and win well, but in these day-night Tests when you are batting is crucial. Winning the toss could prove huge.

Australia v Pakistan best betting tips

Below we highlight some of our best bets, ahead of the Pakistan v Australia 2nd Test.

Most wickets betting 2nd innings – Nathan Lyon

Lyon has an outstanding recent record at the ground, and he has tended to clean up in the opposition team’s second dig. While we think he is also a contender to top the wicket takers in Pakistan’s first innings, the second innings seems a better bet on the theory that the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins will wreak havoc early.

Top Pakistan bowler 1st innings: Yasir Shah

The veteran right-arm leg-spinner took four wickets in the only Australian innings in Brisbane. The bad news is he went for more than 200 runs! He should find a lot more assistance in Adelaide and the $3.75 seems fair enough as the Australians can be less than convincing against Shah’s type of bowling.

Man of the match betting: Nathan Lyon at $13

As mentioned, Lyon loves bowling at the Adelaide Oval these days and short of a terrible capitulation by Pakistan he should get plenty of overs. He has become arguably the best off-spinner in the world but we think he is certainly the best under of his type under Australian conditions. If Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins don’t kock you over, the chances are that Lyon will. Great value at $13 plus as he also has great batting form at the ground and could end up as a nightwatchman at some stage.

Australia v Pakistan betting prediction

While Australia on paper seem too powerful, we have seen some disparate results in these day-night Tests so we are not prepared to load up at the short quote on an Australian win. Steve Smith rarely even fails even once with the bet let alone twice in a row and with a little more movement early to trouble the Australian top order this time around, he might well get a much earlier opportunity at the crease. So we are happy to avoid the result markets and bet along with Lyon and Shah for the bowling honours, and Smith to do well in many of the batting markets. It promises to be another intriguing Test, as the Pakistan team certainly possesses immense talent and are invariably entertaining. Good punting.
