The Cape Summer Festival of Racing will feature six major race days at Kenilworth between November 2026 and February 2027, with the World Sports Betting Cape Town Met and L’Ormarins King’s Plate headlining South Africa’s summer racing calendar.
The programme begins on November 29 with the Lucky Fish Cape Punters Cup and concludes on February 27 with Swiss Derby Day, bringing together several of the country’s most prestigious thoroughbred contests.
Among the highlights are the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas, Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, L’Ormarins King’s Plate and World Sports Betting Cape Town Met, with some of South Africa’s leading horses expected to compete during the four-month festival.
Organisers are also expanding the entertainment programme surrounding each meeting, with food festivals, live music, fashion events and family activities designed to attract visitors beyond the traditional racing audience.
Here is a look at the six feature race days and the leading contenders expected to shape the Cape summer season.
Lucky Fish Cape Punters Cup – November 29, 2026
The Cape Summer Festival of Racing opens on Sunday, November 29, with the Lucky Fish Cape Punters Cup, an important early-season contest for three-year-olds preparing for the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas.
The race provides an opportunity for emerging contenders to establish their credentials ahead of the major three-year-old contests in December.
The opening meeting will also incorporate the Prawn Festival, featuring seafood, live entertainment and family activities. Organisers are positioning the event as a relaxed introduction to the summer racing season.
World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas – December 5, 2026
The first Grade 1 contest of the Cape summer takes place on Saturday, December 5, when the country’s leading three-year-old fillies compete in the World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas.
Flower Island and Over My Shoulder are among the potential contenders, although the final field will depend on nominations and preparations in the coming weeks.
The race is one of the most significant early-season tests for three-year-old fillies and regularly attracts leading runners from racing centres across South Africa.
Away from the track, the meeting will feature a Tacos, Tequila & Purpose event, combining food, cocktails and entertainment with fundraising activities for charity.
Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas – December 16, 2026
The Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas takes centre stage on Wednesday, December 16, providing one of the season’s defining tests for South Africa’s leading three-year-old thoroughbreds.
Jan Van Goyen won the 2025 renewal, delivering a significant Cape victory for Mike and Mathew de Kock in their first season operating as an official training partnership.
The 2026 contest could feature several promising young horses, including Viva’s Asterix, Coast Of The Sun, Erik Dubois, Haute Couture, Fish Tales, Wreath Of Snow and Continue The Dream.
Their participation remains subject to confirmation, but the depth of potential contenders suggests another competitive renewal of the prestigious race.
The public holiday meeting will also feature Christmas at the Races, with a Christmas market, Santa appearances, live music and family entertainment forming part of the programme.
L’Ormarins King’s Plate – January 9, 2027
One of South Africa’s most prestigious mile races returns to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday, January 9, with the running of the L’Ormarins King’s Plate over 1600 metres.
The Real Prince claimed the 2026 edition, joining an illustrious list of winners in a race renowned for attracting the country’s leading thoroughbreds.
Questioning and Jan Van Goyen are among the potential contenders for the 2027 renewal, while the possible participation of Double Grand Slam would add further interest to the contest.
The meeting also features two other major races, the Cartier Paddock Stakes and World Pool Cape Flying Championship, ensuring a strong supporting programme for fillies, mares and specialist sprinters.
The King’s Plate remains a major occasion on Cape Town’s social calendar, with its traditional blue-and-white dress code, fashion, fine dining and hospitality experiences complementing the racing.
World Sports Betting Cape Town Met – January 30, 2027
The World Sports Betting Cape Town Met will headline the summer programme on Saturday, January 30, when South Africa’s leading middle-distance thoroughbreds compete in one of the country’s most prestigious races.
See It Again won the 2026 edition, adding another major victory to a career that has established him among South Africa’s elite racehorses.
The former Horse of the Year could return to defend his title, although his participation has yet to be confirmed.
Potential challengers include Note To Self, Viva’s Liberte and Eight On Eighteen, setting up the possibility of a high-quality contest featuring several established stars.
The meeting also includes the Maine Chance Majorca Stakes, with Quickstepgal, Double Grand Slam, Reet Petite and Wish List among the possible contenders.
The Cape Town Met is traditionally one of South Africa’s biggest racing and social occasions, attracting large crowds for a programme combining top-level racing, fashion, entertainment and hospitality.
Organisers are expected to reveal the official theme for the 2027 event in early November, ahead of the ticket launch and promotional campaign.
Swiss Derby Day – February 27, 2027
The Cape Summer Festival of Racing concludes on Saturday, February 27, with Swiss Derby Day, featuring another important examination of South Africa’s leading three-year-olds.
The Derby has traditionally played a significant role in identifying horses capable of progressing to major middle-distance and staying contests later in the season, including the Durban July.
Wish List made history in the previous renewal, becoming the first filly since 1999 to win the race and establishing herself among the country’s most promising young thoroughbreds.
The 2027 edition will provide another opportunity for the emerging generation to demonstrate its ability over longer distances as attention begins shifting towards the winter racing programme.
In a departure from the other festival meetings, Swiss Derby Day will also feature international show jumping, bringing two equestrian disciplines together at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
Swiss-inspired food, live music, family entertainment and a sunset celebration will complete the final day of the festival.
How to buy tickets for the Cape Summer Festival
Tickets for the six feature race days will go on sale through Computicket, with organisers expected to announce booking details shortly.
Outside the major festival meetings, Kenilworth will continue staging regular race meetings approximately twice a week throughout the season.
General admission to these regular meetings is free, giving racing fans an opportunity to attend without purchasing tickets for the festival’s major events.
