Denmark online casino revenue rises as sports betting slumps
Denmark’s online casino market continued to grow in August 2026, with revenue increasing 12.5% year-on-year despite a sharp downturn in sports betting, according to figures released by the Danish Gambling Authority.
The regulator, Spillemyndigheden, reported that total gambling gross gaming revenue (GGR) fell 7.1% compared with August 2025, with sports betting recording the largest decline of any regulated gambling segment.
Sports betting revenue dropped 42.7%, while online casino revenue moved in the opposite direction, strengthening its position as Denmark’s largest regulated gambling sector.
Overall gambling revenue reached DKK678 million (€90.9 million) during August, with online casinos accounting for DKK415 million and sports betting contributing DKK132 million.
The figures were published on October 8 as part of the regulator’s monthly gambling market statistics. The year-on-year percentage changes are adjusted for changes in Denmark’s gross domestic product (GDP), allowing comparisons using a consistent economic baseline.
The downturn in sports betting was particularly pronounced following a stronger July, when betting revenue increased 21.3% year-on-year. Online casino revenue also grew in July, rising 22%, suggesting the casino sector maintained its upward trajectory across both months.
The regulator’s July figures showed total gambling revenue increasing 17.2%, highlighting the considerable month-to-month variation in Denmark’s gambling market.
Outside online gambling, gaming machine revenue declined 2.6% in August, while land-based casinos recorded an 8.7% increase. Land-based bingo revenue rose 6.4%.
The contrasting results underline the growing importance of online casino gaming to Denmark’s licensed gambling industry, even as sports betting revenue fluctuates.
Denmark operates a regulated gambling market in which private operators can obtain licences to offer online casino games and sports betting under the supervision of Spillemyndigheden.
The regulator’s monthly report also includes information on ROFUS, Denmark’s national voluntary gambling self-exclusion register, and StopSpillet, its gambling harm support service. According to the authority’s latest statistics, 74,714 people were registered with ROFUS as of September 1, 2026.
