England vs India Prediction, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

Welcome to our ICC World Cup predictions for England vs India being played at Edgbaston on Sunday. Our Cricket World Cup betting expert runs the rule over the two teams and finds some potentially lucrative wagers.

England v India was always going to be one of the marquee fixtures of the cricket World Cup 2019. But given the results and turmoil of the past week or so, it has taken on even greater significance, for the struggling home side at least.

England, which head into the event as the world’s No.1 one-day international side, has been badly exposed under pressure batting second, and a loss here against powerful India could end, or at least severely dent, its chances of a first ICC World Cup title on home turf.

A defeat and it could all come down to the last match against New Zealand in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, depending on other results.

England has failed in run chases against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia, and captain Eoin Morgan will be desperately hoping to win the toss and bat first to see if his team can return to its free-wheeling days of racking up scores of 350-plus for fun.

The old adage of putting runs on the board is certainly starting to kick home in this fabulous Cricket World Cup, despite predictions beforehand that scores of 400 would be commonplace.

Indeed, it is more the Test-style batsmen with sound techniques and the super-quick bowlers prepared to pitch the ball up who have dominated, rather than the T20 slashers and wily spinners who thrive so much in that format.

England will almost certainly be boosted by the return of powerful opener Jason Roy after a hamstring problem, but it’s worth checking on match day and before making any wagers. Roy has had intensive treatment on his left hamstring and is expected to be fit for Sunday.

The English opening pair of Jonny Bairstow and James Vince has not worked well so Roy could make an enormous difference to the outcome.

It pays to check leading cricket bookies William Hill on the day of the match to spot any late specials on offer. Your tip for top batsman could be among the enhanced odds offering.

HEAD TO HEAD BETTING:

England $1.95, India $1.83
Prediction: England faces a real mental battle here more than anything to rediscover its mojo. India also has a few question marks over its batting order after losing powerful opener Shikhar Dhawan. We think England will re-emerge and can win this one, particularly if it bats first.

Top batter prediction: We have jumped on the Virat Kohli train of late and there is no reason not to stick with him. We tipped him to top-score against the West Indies, which he did, and also to be man of the match, so it was a happy game for the WGL team. Kohli is arguably the world’s finest batsman, and he seems certain to get in fairly early in this one. $3.25 is skinny but we always like to have class on our side. Joe Root and Ben Stokes have been England’s standouts with the bat, and we will go with Root to lead the team in style. It would help him no end if he was not thrust into the cauldron in the opening couple of overs. We have written a guide to help you with your overall leading run-scorer bets at the 2019 World Cup.

TOP WICKET-TAKER BETTING PREDICTION:

England:
Top five in betting: Jofra Archer $3.75, Mark Wood $4, Adil Rashid $4.50, Chris Woakes $5, Liam Plunkett $5, Tom Curran $5.

Top wicket-takers from past five ODIs:

v Bangladesh: Jofra Archer 3-29, Ben Stokes 3-23

India:
Top five in betting: Jasprit Bumrah $3.50, Mohammed Shami $4, Yuzvendra Chahal $4, Bhuvneshwar Kumar $4.50, Kuldeep Yadav $5.

Top wicket-takers from past five ODIs:
v West Indies: Mohammed Shami 4-16
v Afghanistan: Mohammed Shami 4-40
v Pakistan: Vijay Shankar 2-22, Kuldeep Yadav 2-32, Hardik Pandya 2-44,
v New Zealand: Match abandoned
v Australia: Jasprit Bumrah 3-61, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3-50

Top bowler tip: We have cottoned on to the fact that pace rules at this World Cup, so we have to stick again with Jofra Archer. He was disappointed at his showing against Australia and will be keen for redemption here. The $3.75 seems fair enough considering how well he has done overall. England will treat Jasprit Bumrah with great caution, which may allow someone like Mohammed Shami to again get under the opposition’s guard at a decent price. Best bets: England v India

Each of our ICC World Cup betting previews will highlight some potential wins for punters, or where our cricket tipsters think there is value to be found.

Joe Root man of the match at $11

We have thrown in our lot with Root quite often in this tournament and see no reason to change. Root stands tall in the tough battles when others who have dominated lesser attacks have fallen away. If England win we are pretty sure Root will play a big part in it and hopefully for us, claim Man of the Match honours.

England v India prediction

Backs to the wall for England in this one. This is the first match in which the English will start outsiders in betting with William Hill. We think they can rise to the occasion even if it will seem like a home match for India, given the enormous support they have wherever they play. We are predicting, for the sake of the tournament, England can win this one and remain in contention.
